Many of the equine insurance companies that advertise will be good however b E & Little wary of one particular company that has been subject of more adverse posts on this forum tha n any other company.
I'm with NFU, they aren't the cheapest but I've never had any problems with any past claim.
Used Petplan for all my horses over the years(and dog) and they have always paid out no problem, and I have claimed far too much from them at one time or another as my old boy liked going to the vets far too much!
Just like to say I have used both Petplan and SEIB and had awful problems with the former when my horse died, they lost documents 3 times and I had to repeat the whole upsetting event many times over the phone, it finally took 5 months for them to pay out. SEIB have been brilliant so far. They have paid out promptly and fairly. Having said that I am about to put in another claim for Declan who is the most unluckiest horse I know, not only has he got bone spavin he has just damaged both his hind suspensory ligaments so fingers crossed they will cover this as I have just had shock wave treatment done in the hope that they will!!
They have tried it on a couple of times with exclusions e.g my pony strained her check ligament, and when the renewal came though they tried to exclude all tendon and ligaments on both front legs! But a letter from my vet soon sorted that out!
Have been with NFU, SEIB, and scottish equestrian in the past, luckily never had to claim! So can't comment about payouts, am now with rural organised through world equestrian services as they were the most competitive and would insure my foal for all ailments and injuries whereas some others wouldn't until he was 6 months old! Like others have said avoid the E.xtra & L. owest cost company!! Who also now have another website in another name but is linked to the same company so beware, find out who are the underwriters and if its a big name like cornhill or allianz etc then it should be fairly trustworthy.
