I know of someone who is/was with them and they only had good things to say, although when their horse decided it would be a good idea to try and climb through a barbed wire fence, they weren't covered for the vets bill (but I don't know if thats specific to AIMS or all insurers!?).
AIMS are just another part of SEIB, when i was looking for insurance you get more/better cover going directly to SEIB, the premiums might be slightly more but get more for your pennies. If you call SEIB they will run you through the differences
I used to have a horse insured with them and I would never use them again!!
They were slow to pay, tried to change the terms of my policy to avoid paying out and only told me once I had started a claim that they didn't settle up until the claim was finished instead of settling each months vet bill as it arrived.
My claim went on for several months and amounted to nearly £4K which I had to find to pay the vets!!!
I managed to get one interim payment from them in the middle for about £1500.
Whenever I spoke to them on the phone they clearly didn't have a clue what they were talking about with regards to horses.
They did settle eventually but it was a struggle to have to had to find the money and then when they did finally pay out they had the audacity to take off the 10% discount that my vet offers if bills are settled within 10 days of issue so i still lost about £400!!
My vet and I had done everything by the book, kept them fully informed of everything that was happening and got all the relevant permission before certain diagnostics were carried out etc etc.

how long ago were you insured with them? They now pay invoices as and when you receive them. I have used them, I just wondered what other peoples experiences with them were!

I'm glad they have changed how they do things!!
It was about 2003/4 that i was with them. I had to speak to one of the senior staff members one day and he said he was 'very surprised' to hear that every other insurance company I know made monthly payments as vets bills were recieved.
The stupid thing about the whole issue was I ended up selling the horse to pay the bills as they took so long to pay!!
I was going to sell him anyway but ended up selling him for alot less than his market value as he had been out of work for treatment and I couldn't afford to take the time to get him back into full work and up to scratch after he was given the all clear.
There's some guidance on horse insurance companies at www.horsecover.co.uk. I think that they recommend PetPlan Equine who seem to have quite a good reputation as far as I can see.
