Horse insurance for oldies

Hi all,

I was wondering if you insure your old horses?
I am desperately looking for ways to save money each month and my insurance is currently £34 per month and likely to increase this year!
My horse is now 16 and I don't really do a lot with him, it just seems a bit pointless insuring him as if it came to it I probably wouldn't put him through any stressful surgery/treatments. I was wondering what all your views are?

I've kept it the same cover the last couple of years. I think it did go up about £20 this year, which I presumed was hitting the 16 mark! I probably should have quibbled with them to try and get them to knock it back down, but just didn't have the time. But they have been helpful when I've phoned them :)

Pet plan equine do a veterans insurance that might suite you. My oldie is on that....its about £17 a month and good cover x
 
I've three, one 18 (a list of exclusions from his eventing career as long as your arm) one 19 (companion). I have BHS membership for public liability at £60 a year, a savings account into which I put £25 a month (by standing order) with a sensible amount in it and credit cards.
I found oldies cover only included accident which is really restrictive - to make cover affordable I had an excess of £500 - which in reality is plenty to cover a call out, stitch up and antibiotics for a moment of field madness!
I wouldn't put them through colic surgery or equivalent and I have my own land so if they need a couple of months off to rest a niggle/ mild lameness - no problem.

So I wasn't really sure what I had the insurance for - hence I don't bother.
