You can't really generalise about Horse insurance. The price depends on so many factors, value of the horse, type of cover, permanent loss etc, all sorts of things.
The one thing we all know is that we stay away from a certain insurance company who never want to pay out....OK
Hi it isn't about how cheap it is. I've learnt my lesson. Due to personal circumstances I couldn't afford to stay with my insurance company who I'd been with for five years as I'd three horses to insure at the time and swapped to another, definately cheaper, but not the cheapest. However, I'm paying the price now as I'm making a claim at the moment and getting nothing but the run around and my horses future literally lies in their hands as I can't afford to do this on my own. Take care and do a bit of research before you decide; speak to people locally to get recommendations. Generally people will only be to happy to let you know which ones to go for and which ones to stay away from.
I was £40 a month, but looked around and found one that was £179 a year for the same thing. I don't insure tack though as I don't own items that are singly expensive so I don't feel its worth it. Just me , him and other people. Plus have BHS Gold membership. If I didn't have 3rd party he wouldn't come out of his stable!!
I pay about £24 a mnth for comp horse cover (including XC etc) for vets fees and death. Get third party through BE, and dont insure tack....and horse is insured well under market value, but least i have the reasurrance that it is there with a goo reputable company if anything ever goes wrong (fingers crossed it never will though!)
As far as I know Petplan are a very good company to insure with - so it may be that to reduce your premiums you should consider what you have insured. Perhaps your horse is insured for too much? Have you included loss of use and tack? All of those things can hike the premiums up.
My horse is covered for vet fees and destruction only.
