Used to use NFU and they were very good, but the premiums went up so much I couldn't afford it any more. I'm with AMTrust now and they seem ok, although I've not had to claim.
If you're looking for an insurer it might be worth asking your vets if they can recommend anyone, as they usually have a good idea about who pays out and who doesn't
Scottish Equestrian Services. I used a broker to find me the best deal. I also have never made a claim on any of my insurance so can't say whether they're any good.
Had the misfortune of having my horse (walking disaster horse) with E&L - never did get the loss of use claim from them.
Now have one with Equestrian Direct - haven't had to claim with them but have been very help when I've phoned them, other is still with petplan but will probably go to equestrian direct as PP premiums have gone up hugely AND I get a discount being a VN.
Scottish Equestrian Insurance Services - very competitive prices compared to others. this worried me when i made a claim last year as I had my horse put down but neednt have worried they paid out his full sum insured and vets fees fairly quickly but with no fuss.
would highly recommend them.
NFU - Had two claims at once for my TB in January - navicular and kissing spine - paid for both within 10 days incl transport to/from vets and for ongoing physio.
They have been brill, and my new horse is with them too.

ditto had two claims running side by side , no quibble no questions lovely to deal with liased with my vet,,, have all insured with now incl dog,lorry,car,2horses,house contents!!!
NFU...but never had to claim. Hate to think how much money theyhave had from me over the years! Worth it for the peace of mind, I guess. Friends' experience claiming has been very good but you do often have to haggle/negotiate. I've just had a long wrangle with them over the ATV...they quoted a stupidly low price to replace it so I told them to go and find one at that price and they conceded...
Petplan for 8 yrs now. They have always been helpful and have paid out for costs over £5000 when Mickey had a sacroilliac strain/spavin.
It is getting expensive though, and as my premium is up for renewal I may hunt around and compare prices.
SEIB and black carriage house or something? Haven't claimed from the first but the latter were very friendly and supportive while Dermot was sick but never had trouble with the claim.
NFU because I was recommeded them by you lovely people on this forum! Never had to claim yet as havent even had a months cover.
Although they didnt cancel my direct debit for the last horse I had to take back to the dealer even though I cancelled his policy... Will be onto them on tuesday. But i'm sure it was a silly mistake and i'll be refunded everything but 2 weeks worth of that.
