Hi All,

I have just moved my horse to a livery yard, and it is part of our contract that the horse is covered by insurance, atleast for Veterinary fees.

I have personally always been of the opinion that it is better to put the money aside 'in case' of an emergency rather than line the insurance companies pockets but I do want to stay at this yard so probably best I sort this out!

So I just wondered if anybody could point me in the direction of an insurer that they would recommend......

I have an 8yo ex racer who has previous tendon injuries in both front legs (mad I know!) but is now sound and back into full work, and we don't really do anything exciting - jsut a bit of hacking, schooling and a few local shows.

If anyone has any thoughts on this it would be very much appreciated!! :-)

I have always used KBIS, currently going through a claim with them at the moment due to losing my 10yr old last month and they have been fab with everything. I find them very reasonable with their quotes as opposed to some other companies as well.

as webble says, usually it is 3rd party insurance that livery yards want you to have. So I would double check first if is is the membership of BHS is the easiest way to do this

I insure for vet bills through South essex ins. Been with them many years and have had lots of claims, all of which have been paid promptly

Petplan equine......they arent cheapest but you get what you pay for, people are always going to the cheaper company and guess what they dont pay out when you need it. it may be that you have both front excluded due to the tendon injuries but i no they are reviewable to specific tendon invloved after i think 12 months back in full work! You pay for what you get!!!!!

Thanks for your responses guys :-)

Yes I thought it was a little odd......but being new to this livery yard malarkey (as have just recently moved and kept him at a friends previously)I thought perhaps it was a normal request that I hadn't considered!!

but it is definitely for vets fees and we are asked to show proof of it too, I am with the BHS and have their 3rd party liability insurance but just no insurance otherwise.

I have heard petplan are cheap, but have also heard some pretty bad reviews about them - but like you say nutnut you get what you pay for!! I will take a look at KBIS, thank you all for your help!!

I don't think that there is a 'best' insurance company, there are plenty of good one's out there. There is certainly a worst one, E & L, there premiums are very cheap & you find out why when you try & make a claim. There has been more adverse comment about this company on this forum than any other insurance company.

Please see the below link for reviews on their performance:

'Barge Pole' comes to mind? :(

NFU seem quite good and most vets will accept payment from them rather than you having to pay the vets and they been reimbursed by insurance. I think E & L make vets are very nervous about ever getting paid. Petplan also seem expensive but reliable.

I would recommend pet plan, only insurance company I've ever used but they were amazing with my boys vet treatment. Paid it all off even though he's 16 and it was sinking of the pedal bones, then tendon strain and expensive supplements :)

Are you sure it's petplan you have heard is cheap?? they are usually known for being the exact opposite lol.If you get a cheap quote from petplan do let us know!!

I am with petplan, they are actually one of the most expensive, but IMO worth it.I have made a claim earlier in the year and couldn't fault them, totally hassle free and paid up with no quibble whatsoever direct to my vet.

Will be interesting to see what my premium is next year though;)

Other than petplan I have heard good things about scottish equestrian and KBIS.

May be worth checking with your vets as well as some will only deal with certain insurance companies direct. My vets will only deal with petplan and one other so that was another reason I chose them, takes the hassle out of things if do ever need to claim.

Another vote for KBIS, couldn't afford to insure mine for vets fees.. Youngster has turned out to be one that attracts lots of nicks and bumps so thought I'll investigate insuring "just in case".

Has some quotes of around £500/600 - for a 12 month warmblood gelding, lives in a field with a house onsite, may occasionally go showing but apart from that is at grass.. Insured value fee £1k.. I'm not paying £500 a year for up to 3k vets!

Then contacted kbis who quoted me half of the above - very reasonable and easy to contact (no on hold business) and straight forward easy to talk to people!

Ideal:)

I'm with Stoneways and they have been brilliant with my 2, especially my youngster who has a knack of getting herself into trouble in the field! Not extortionate and have paid out no questions asked on numerous occasions.
