I've had really good experiences with Amtrust Equine (also known as Equicover). Premiums are OK, they have paid out quickly on a claim and only excluded what had been the subject of the claim.
Nfu are really good but you pay for it. I have used pet plan, again very good a lot cheaper but put big exclusions on if you claim. I claimed for an infectious disease the following year they excluded all infections or infectious diseases not just the one condition he had had.
As above for KBIS; have used them over a long period of time for different horses. They pay out quickly, but my god, as I have posted here before, are they the master of the exclusion clause!
I was with KBIS for many years, and quite honestly, if the horse so much as sneezes they slap an exclusion on the policy. One they put on my policy was absolutely ridiculous (horse got a hawthorn in his coronary band which needed vet to remove and give antibiotic jab - that was all and there were no further issues with the foot). The exclusions are just so silly, so with new horse im with NFU. FAR more realistic, and also they dont require the tack room to have a 5 lever mortice lock, whereas every other insurers does require this. (obviously tack room is locked, but not with a 5 lever mortice). I couldnt fit this type of lock to the tack room so any claim for theft of tack, under any other insurer, would have been declined leaving me in a right pickle ! So up to now, im very happy with NFU
NFU for me. I had to claim a few years ago for a random, one-off colic that my older mare had and was pleased (and relieved to see that it was not added as an exclusion) as the vet put it down to just a one-off event.
They are expensive but worth it. I also have my trailer insured with them as well as the two horses.
NFU. I pay around £50 a month for my 3 year old tb who will hopefully go eventing. May sound like a lot but he cost me an awful lot as a yearling so I wanted him covered for everything including MRI scans which a lot of insurance companies don't cover and my excess is very small. I haven't had to claim yet but I thought I would have to over christmas when he stabbed himself in the neck and the vet said the was a very high chance he would need to be taken in to the horsepital! I rang NFU and they told me to do whatever was needed and they would do their best to sort it out and told me they hoped he felt better soon (silly I know, but still nice to hear a friendly voice at quite a stressful and upsetting time). Luckily he didn't need to go in the end so my bill wasn't too big and I didn't have to claim. I just really like how friendly they are and how efficient they are at getting stuff done. My mum had to claim from NFU for my competition mare a few years ago when she did a tendon and they paid straight away, although that leg is now on an exclusion policy!
but I thought I would check KBIS out but when we looked at the small print and found out all the things they don't cover including if you carry on first aid after the vet has done the first bit and it goes wrong they don't cover you. More as well so I quickly put KBIS insurance form through the shredder and now
Out of all the insurance I think SEIB are the best
Ive always insured with petplan and they paid all my ponys vet bills after he had a fall being ridden in october and had a fracture that had never been seen in a live horse. I lost my pony due to his injury and the complications it was causing and they paid out for his death and disposal. Theyve been great all the way through and paid out almost a full £5000 in vets fees and when jis specialist from glasgow rang them in person to request permission to put him to sleep I had a letter giving permission through my letterbox before 48 hrs was up.
Petplan have paid out about 3k on my current ongoing claims! my renewal was last month, expected the premium to double, it went up by £3 a month! so pleased!
In 14 yrs I've never claimed before, but can't complain about anything so far
I was with SEIB for many years but they added so many exclusions when I asked for a quote on my new horse that I told them not to bother. I'm now with Animal Friends who claim to be an ethical insurance provider who donate to animal charities.
