Hi, thought i better ask as i know its a bit of a minefield!!! I have had qhotes from NFU which seems a fab policy but v expensive at over double any other quote i have had (just slightly under a £1000 a year for my cob and welsh section A) and thats for vets, death and third party cover. I got a reasonable quote from horse-insurance.co.uk but i havent heard of them before so not too sure if they are reputable? Same cover near enough for £350 a year.

So who do you recommend and who to avoid? Ive already had a bad experience with pet ins before when my ragdoll cat cost me £800 in bills (sadly we lost her) and ins wormed their way out of it Grrrrrr!!! Want some peace of mind for my equine friends! :-))

Thanks in advance, Angela.

I use KBIS and so does my YO. I havent had any reason to claim yet but she has and so far everytime they have been helpful, knowledgeable and decent when it came to paying out.
I was recommended them as she had bad experiences with other companies, and KBIS have knowledgable staff.
:)

We have been with PetPlan for 15yrs plus- dogs and horses and trailers- claimed for everything from skin problems-lameness- surgeries- accidents etc. We have had two claims in for the same horse for different problems and they always pay up.

Oh and check your policy CAREFULLY. Friend "thought" she had £3k vet cover only to find in a crisis, that it was limited to £1k per incident!

I have just insured with animal friends. I liked them because they don't have an annual claim clause and they pay a % of their profits to animal charities.

On a lazy level they have insured my dogs aswell as my pony so its easier to keep track of and I got a 10% multiple animal policy.

Luckily I haven't needed to make a claim but the people on the phone have been lovely which is nice in this day and age.

Made the mistake of E & L years ago and ended up arguing with them for months and eventually getting some money but not what I thought my policy covered! NFU have been great although (touch wood) I haven't had any big claims with them just the odd cut and graze.

horseinsurance.co.uk is underwritten by E & L so although i havent ever had to claim from them.....i have never heard anything good about them.

I use KBIS for both my horses (i pay the premium for my horse that is loaned out and they pay me so i know he is covered). The premiums are very reasonable. The people are very helpful.

We use Scottish Equestrian (SEIS) who are always pleasant to deal with and paid up fully on our £4k bill for our previous boy with no quibbles. They paid out for an MRI too which I understand some companies won't do or will only pay part towards (?) :)

Recieved a very good looking cheque today from Petplan including remidial shoeing (difference) and they have paid the MRI fee direct to hospital

I use KBIS - had to claim for a hock issue this year and they were great - forms sent out promptly - claim was settled immediately and vet had his cheque inside a week. They also guaranteed any further claims on that hock for the same issue for 12 months following treatment - after the 12 months the hock will be excluded barring any injuries of unrelated issues.

My vet told me he wouldnt be my vet any more until I changed insurance companies from E&L because they never pay out under any circumstances! Have used NFU and they were very good when my saddle and bridle were stolen, now use pet plan but never had to claim (touch wood).

I've used SEIB, SEIS and have got my new boy insured with KBIS.

Found SEIB very good for my friend when I had to call them up after he died suddenly, very sympathetic. I was insured with them but never had to claim. Was with SEIS (scottish equestrian) for about 4 years and found them to be excellent in terms of claims. As another poster has said they pay out 100% on MRI and dont need to faff around speaking to your vets and getting a long winded approval which is nice. They didnt pay out on my lads death and I found them to be a bit difficult to deal with but I was highly emotional about it all.. but TBH i think thats the case with mortality payments with most insurance companies anyway.

I'm with KBIS now as I want to insure for loss of use and they came out as really reasonable, plus you are insured for up to £7,500 in a case of colic so that gives me peace of mind. Plus the vets seem to think they are v good so thats a relief.

Wouldnt touch E&L with a bargepole.. many vets will want upfront payment from you if they are your insurance company which is worth bearing in mind.. yes they are cheap but for a reason!
