Who are your horses insured with?
How good are they at paying out if you claim?
How expensive are they?
Fudge is an 11 year old Welsh cob, who is insured for RC activities with Petplan, I want an insurance policy with good vets fees cover.
His premium is £445 for the coming year even though he is only insured for £1350. (I want to insure him for £2500 as this is what he is worth).
Can anyone recommend me an insurance company to switch to please?

I'm with NFU but I think they's stopped taking on new horse policies. I've not had any experience of SEIB but they were brilliant when my friend had to claim for loss of use for her horse last year.

I have heard that NFU pay out quite well, although they frustrate me with their exclusions, I think all companies exclude in the same way - it does drive me mad, and I pay huge amounts, since my horse is insured for loads a money!

I sometimes wonder whether it would be worth the gamble of saving x amount for vets bills instead of insuring for those, but daren't take the plunge. I'm too far along not doing it to risk starting now. You know, what if you have colic surgery or something out of the blue?

Anyhow, NFU or SEIB. Probably both as good.

Ive just moved to AmTrust from Petplan. Can't tell you what there like yet i hope there good.
I had lots of recommendations for them though from people who have had pay outs & all the feedback seemed ok. AmTrust have more than halfed my premium for the same level of cover with Petplan.
I don't understand why Petplan is so expensive ive still got another horse with them & my dog but i will be moving them this year & ive been with Petplan for years but i can't cope with there rising premiums!!

I'm with NFU. I had quite a big vet claim last year for one of my horses (£2,500) and then loss of use, and they paid out with no problems at all. I phoned around to get some prices when I got my new horse, and NFU were about the cheapest.

I have been with NFU for years and they have paid out twice for expensive treatment without any problems whatsoever. They are a bit more expensive than some but I would recommend them every time.

Im with petplan. My horse is insured for £8000 and he does affiliated eventing. His premium this year was just under £1000. They are always good at paying out. Ive never had a year where it has not been good value, so Im either really unlucky or they are...cant work out which!

Im with KBIS, they have been brilliant, paying out very quickly for vets fee's and farriery, no hassle, even though its been a long, complicated and expensive few months for what it essentially bruised soles!

I used to use Petplan and I do highly recommend them. We are now with NFU but have yet to make a claim (hopefully never will though)

Hi. I underwrite horse insurance (not for any of the companies mentioned here) but my first thought would be that your Petplan premium seems quite high for the value you have him insured for so I think it would be well worth shopping around.

I have 2 of my horses insured with Petplan as they have been with them years and are now over 16 yrs of age but Petplan allow full cover up to a higher age limit than most insurers hence why my 2 horses are still there (althogh our youngest horse I have insured with my company). However, Petplan do not seem to want to budge on premiums even though we have never made a claim and have been with them years. My advice would be to see what discount insurers are willing to provide - it's a very competitive market I can tell, you! Maybe try an insurance broker, they can shop for you and sometimes have more power at obtaining discounts.
