Up till i cancelled them today ive had my ponies insured with e and l. they have been bloody dreadful trying to get a pay out for my dog god knows what will happen if i need one on the ponies.
so who else is good to use

I'm with AmTrust Equine and they are bloomin good! No messing around, know what they are talking about, very helpful, excellent price and (touchwood because I haven't had to!) very good rep for paying out claims.
NFU are good too, but their quote was a lot and I mean a LOT more expensive for me than AmTrust.
E & L have an awful rep for paying up, I think I would rather put the money aside in a bank account than pay it to them every month and not be able to get money from my claim!

Another one for Amtrust - they were really fab with me when i had to have my last mare put to sleep. They were really kind and helpful and they paid up quickly and with no fuss at all.

I wouldn't insure with anyone else now.

I m with Scottish Equestrian and they are reasonable priced . Only had to claim twice for my horses but both times no quibble. I recommend them.

I'm with KBIS now with my youngster. Very happy with them, There doc's are easy to understand!!

Had my mare with PetPlan. They were FANTASTIC. They sorted it with the vets once the claim form was sent. keep you up to date with everything. Cannot fault them!!
Unfortunatly she had several claims
colic Impaction over £600, 5 Sarcoids removed over £500, Broken tooth About £550 With several call outs due to infection and Navicular over £1500
They would not insure my foal when got him, Think it was because he was not vetted and needed cover asap.

My horse had emergency surgery and whacked up a nice vet bill. My Vets asked me for my insurance claim form to make the claim, but said if I was with E&L or Petplan they couldn't do it that way, and asked me to pay it and claim myself!! Speaks volumes! I was with E&L and had tremdous trouble getting it out of them! They tried every trick in the book and so I threatened them with legal action, and finally got paid out. It was hell on earth

Since then, I have gone to NFU as many of my horse mates are with them and had stress free claims. One of my mates insured their trailer with NFU and a week later it got stolen by gypsey's off her drive, the police knew where it was but said it was too dangerous to attempt to retrieve it and NFU paid her out in full for it! Even only after a weeks custom!!!!

At first it did seem like alot of money in comparison to E&L, but you get what you pay for, and I wanted a trustworthy company that would treat me right. Year after year it has gone down. 3 years ago it cost me £50 a month to insure my £3,000 horse plus £800 for tack, and my £3,500 trailer. This year I am paying £38 for the same! I get a discount loyalty bonus every year I am with them! I love them! xx

Sadly NFU are being horrendously slow at deciding whether to give me loss o fuse on a horse with severe deteriorating kissing spines...quite often they don't even pick up the phone, they are not specific about what treatment they expect our vet to give the horse before they will reconsider the loss of use. I think it's just because they have cut back on staffing during the recession (so they told me anyway!). But I wouldn't know who else to recommend as I have always used them.

Never had a problem with NFU although the vet's excess has just gone up to £200. Friend of mine is with KBIS and she is very happy with them too.

From what I have heard, if you are with E&L you might as well not be insured!

As always an insurance claim is dependent on what you are claiming for. These copmpanies don't seem to mind straightforward claims but mention kissing spine and sacroiliac areas and it all grinds to a crawl.

A loss of use claim is a nightmare of a claim in my experience. Insurance companies are a bit naughty too and will try every trick in the book to wriggle out of a claim. I have a case open with the Financial Ombudsman and a company mentioned on this thread who are being investigated at the moment.

There was an article in H&H a month or two ago about "To insure or not to insure" suggesting that was insurance worth the paper it's written on? I guess you can only answer that one yourself based on your own priorities.

I know for sure, when I receive the Ombudsmans decision, I will certainly be changing the priorities of my horses insurance.
