I have insured with NFU for the past 13 years and have just got my renewal notice through and it's £300 more than last year!! I can't afford to pay this much and need to shop around.

My horse is 16 years. Does anyone have a similar aged horse which is insured i would be interested to know how much you pay and what insurance company you are with and also if you have had any dealings with claiming with them?

Thanks in advance!

16 is when they become veterans, according to insurance companies, which pushes the price up accordingly - ridiculous when you think how many horses are still fit and competing happily into their 20s.

Try PetPlan, their veteran plan doesn't kick in until 17, so you still may be able to insure on their regular plan. Merlin is 16 and I pay £29.50 a month. I've never had to claim through the equine insurance, but I've had a couple of claims for dogs and cats through their pet insurance and the cheque has arrived within a fortnight on every occasion.

NFU have whacked their prices up even for young horses too - I have a 4 year old and a 9 year old and my renewal (March 1st) premium had gone up £300 (54%) so I very rapidly took my custom elsewhere. I was most disappointed with NFU; I had insured with them for 16 years and only had two claims in that time. I estimated that they had actually "made" about £7000 out of me . . . so much for their tag line of "we reward loyalty"!

Try KBIS - that's where I've gone . . . . .
