Do not touch E&L with a bargepole. Horrendous to pay out, vets, I have known, dislike them and watch out as they use loads of different alias. NFU brilliant, Pet Plan good, SEIB brilliant

SEIB okay then? don't have any 'naughty' clauses??

I used carriage house last time but for some reason their premiums seem to have gone up loads.

Had problems with *&L & P*t *l*n

Can't recomend NFU enough though!

NFU wanted 300 quid a year BASIC insurance on a shetty!!

But at least these guys pay out and don't take money out of your account that they shouldn't.
I'm shocked that their premiums have gone up. I used to insure my 16.2hh sj'er for death (3k), 3rd party and vet's bills (with exclusions on her sarcoids) for just over £17 p/m

my insurance with NFu is £125 p/m. Thats for 3 horses - 1 with a value of £8500 with full cover incl LOU, 1 with a value of £800 with everything but LOU (they have already paid LOU on her so it increases premium) and then 1 foal value £2500 with as much cover as you can have for foals.

I dont think my premium is bad - especially when ive look round at other places like Pet Plan, SEIB, KBIS etc - i think even E&L wasnt any cheaper!!

Like SK says - you know you get good service from NFu and they pay out and sort things out for you whereas E&L have a bad reputation for not doing.

Suppose its pay your money take your chance

Spit at E and L ! never, stay clear!

NFU all the way!

my 16yr old is with petplan however as NFU wouldnt cover vets fees for illness and petplan will do it until he is 20.

DON'T TOUCH E&L! I being niave when i got my horse went straight to the back of the most common horse mag ever & came across E&L so i thought if their in this mag they have to be half decent, anyway was about to cancel with them (after hearing horror stories) when my mare did something (still not sure after £2500 worth of x rays, bone scans etc) to her hip,to cut a v.long story short they have had my claim form since Nov and needless to say the vets are getting a bit worried now- i'm not going to be paying all the bills! I don't pay them £45 a month for nothing! Can't remember who posted the thread that said about them taking money out without telling you but yes it's right my premium started at £30 pm and slowly quietly went to now £45 without one letter sent to me telling me the changes. When my claim (one day) is over i'm going straight to NFU or SEIB,as getting another horse that will def be more expensive and worth more than my present one. Sorry for essay, don't talk to me about E&L.!!!

I've just been quoted 204 a year for 3rd party, vets fees, death and theft, on a 1k pony. That was SEIB
NFU quoted much higher, they told me their minimum 3rd party was 5.5million.
I might ring NFU back and ask them if they can beat SEIB's quote then.....

I do not insure my horse anymore - the premiums are just too high because she is worth alot and as my parents have alot of disposable money they have decided they would rather pay vets bills than pay an insurance company. On my current horse, so far *touch wood* we are better off than we would be if we paid for insurance (due to excess etc). Obviously if she died I would miss out on the payout to buy a new one but I got her as a baby so *relatively* cheaply and value has been added rather than paid for - have you thought about this option? Obviously you have to decide if you can deal with worst case scenario of say a £10,000 vet bill....
My other horse who got pts was not insured either, we did pay alot of money for her, she broke her leg was at the hospital for a few months then got pts, including her value (at purchase not time of death) we lost over £20,000. So you can save money but it is risky, luckily we can take the risk (and such huge vet bills are rare!!).
The only reason i'm saying this is because insurance companies only ever try to make money - they will always try to get out of paying, they will always exclude everything they can, you can insure with a company every year from a horse being 2 - 20 and then they'll say "sorry we won't insure your horse anymore" etc etc which is why I don't insure - they are just there to make money - but it is a risk!!

From past experience, definately not the first, the second are good (i get my 3rd party from them), someone said they didn't like Petplan - I did - when we used them and made a (quite significant) claim, they paid straight away and were great!
Would probably use NFU if I were to insure again!

I wish I could afford that option.

. I know alot of people do.
The fact is that if a huge bill came in for vets...we would be struggling. Yeah, we could pay it, but it we have small children and it would be too tight.
I am on a 'private' yard. If the pony did any damage to the YO's horses or to the stable for example I would like to know that the YO could claim from me.

My OH refuses to have an animal not insured for at least vets fees. Personally i hate insurance companies, but with horses being so unpredictable and sometimes accident prone, I daren't NOT insure!!

I know what you mean, at the end of the day all you pay an insurance company for is to (hopefully, if they behave) remove the risk for you, and we have to decide if that is worth the premium to us or not, to me, it is not but I agree with you, if I thought it would make things too tight to pay a big bill then I would rather pay them to take the risk for me!!
I would choose from SEIB, PetPlan and SEIB - I'd be happy with any of them!!

Most vets will make you pay upfront if you are insured with E&L - our vet has a claim they are still trying to settle after 2 years.

NFU all the way!

E & L ... NO WAY!!! NFU were good when I had 5 claims going and they paid out nearly £15,000!!! Admittedly they did not want to re-insure me the following year which was a shame because even though I said I did not mind them not insuring the ailments I had claimed for they still would not budge and said they would not re-insure me.

Odd, Hannah is insured for £2k value and £5k vets fees, normal excess and that was £234 a year?

Arh I've just realised the problem, get third party by joining the BHS as a gold member, covers all your horses and works out much cheaper!

NEVER EVER insure with E&L it is the worst company in the world. I know the man who owns it and he is like that with the other businesses he has.
We are with petplan and they have been good to us and we have always managed to claim easily and get the money from them, this included LOU

It is imperative that everyone has at least 3rd party insurance for their horse. Any damage he does needs to be be covered, he could kill/ injure a child, cause a serious car accident anything really and nowadays you will be sued. So the BHS gold option is a brilliant option. All insurance companies are putting prices up as more and more people are claiming. I understood the NFU were not taking on new clients at the moment - only new horses for exisiting clients - does anyone know anything else about this?

Going to be different, but the best quote I got was KBIS. People are lovely, and horsey, they are very flexible soyou can find the right cover for you, and they are very quick at getting it sorted out. Definitely the best IMO. NFU wanted vets cert when had had the horse for almost 2yrs when got quotes this year.

I have 1 horse insured with E&L because they were the only company who would insure him, and it is a battle to get the money but they have always eventually paid out for the 5 different claims amounting to over £3000.

1 is insured with South Essex who have been fantastic dealing with a long term illness including an expensive trip to liphook.

4 are insured with NFU who are definitely the best at paying out but they put the most ridiculous exclusions on. I had a pony with an inflammed bursa in his shoulder, so they excluded his hocks. I had a pony vetted that needed shoeing, so they excluded "feet", and then to top it off one of them got a cough so they excluded all my horses for "respiratory complaints".

So overall I would recommend South Essex or NFU really, whichever gives you the lower quote.
