Hi

Just some advice/opinions please. I currently insure my 17 year old with NFU this year they wanted £60/month for full cover and value of horse £2500. I got it down to £50/month full cover value of horse £500. This doesnt include tack or anything else. And i am finding it very expensive seeing as he now really only hacks

Now touch wood my boy is quite healthy so do i put him on a veteran policy £25/month ( which once i do this i have been told i then cant put him back on to full cover) which wont cover colic surgery etc and degenerative problems.

I love my boy very much and i worry if i change his policy and then something happens i wont be able to pay for surgery/massive vets bills/ and if he colicked then he would have to be pts. But it is getting very expensive to keep this up as he has never had problems before and for a horse that is just used now for hacking and the rare local show.

Help!!!! Sorry if this sounds confusing and like i am wittling on... I was going to change his policy then thoiught i would give it another year or so untill he gets to an age where surgery wont be an option but i cant afford £500+/year insurance.

I'm on Petplan Equine Veteran. I started the plan when my horse was 17 and he's now 21. I pay £13 a month for full cover - £1,500 vet fees (per accident/illness) £10mill 3rd party, £1,500 on death/loss of use, £1,000 in reward money if stolen/lost. He's on the group 4 insurance which covers eventing up to 3*, Elementary and over dressage, hacking, SJ of any height, polo, mounted games etc etc

I rang petplan and as soon as i said he was 17 they quoted £50 something pounds just for a veteran policy!! maybe i need to re ring the 5 insurance companies again.. Its a minefield i dont want to sound tight with my money but i earn very little so have to account for everything. :-(

£50 a month?! Sorry but that's a ripoff. I'm with Amtrust Equine, who are superb, and pay £44 per month for a 7yo, insured for £3.5K, £5K vets fees inc hospitalisation, alternative therapies and so on, and he's insured for hacking, DR, SJ, and hunting.

Sorry, but are you sure? I used to work for petplan, and the veteran policy never covered illness. Things may have changed, but I would be very surprised in view of the fact that you are paying £13 a month, as this was always the premium for accidental cover only...

My 20 year old is insured with Petplan on their normal insurance policy. I pay £39 per month for full vet fees (accident and illness) up to £5000 per claim. He is insured for £1500 but no loss of use or third party. I have only had him insured for just under 2 years and they have recently paid out two claims, the most recent for just under £1000, paid direct to vet without any quibble. My excess is £135 per claim.

I just wonder if if you have been with the same insurance company for a few years you get a better deal? saying that i have been with NFU for 10 years and thats the best they can do!!!!!!!!!!

May give petplan another ring then.

Do you keep your tack in a mortice locked and alarmed building? If the answer is no then take your tack off the policy, insurance companies won't pay out these days unless this is the criteria, so you are paying for something they won't insure anyway.

My horse is rising 17 and it costs me £820 per year/£65 per month and that is NOT with tack covered so I don't feel too sorry for you :)

If you have no reason to think your horse may be susceptible to colic and your vet thinks this then take a gamble and put him on the veteran policy.

You might want to reduce your third party liabiilty or the amount the insurance will pay out per incident, but this is kind of playing with fire a bit IMHO.

Gosh who are you with ? nope tack not insured anyway.Dont think i will take risk with the 3rd party liability too risky just got to either make the decison to put him on a veteran policy, ring round, or put up with it:p
