Hello All

Its that time of year for me to renew my ponys insurance and before I hunt for the best quote - I was wondering what recommendations/ not recomendations that you guys have on horse insurance.

I am currently with KBIS which have proved really good so may stay with them.

If anyone doesnt mind - what do people pay per month with who and what does it cover? and what excess ?

Also what exeperiences people have had with their company's etc......

Thanks

Dont KBIS have a funny way of working out your excess on a claim. Im a Petplan girl and always have been!

NFU are brilliant and very reasonable. They are nice people to deal with (well, my local office is) and if you have to make a claim they pay out very quickly and pay the vet direct.

My premiums are approx 10% of the insured value of the horse including the following:

Vet's fees up to £5000 [and that includes 50% of the livery costs if they stay in horsepital - not all insurance companies do this, some will not pay anything]
personal liability
personal accident
loss of horse
and all the extras like covering someone riding/leading your horse etc

I am disappointed with NFU it turns out they only pay 80% of sum insured for loss of use minus your excess. They say this is because of residual value. Dont know what residual value a gelding with very bad leg has its not like i can breed from him? Make sure you read the small print.

I'm with SEIS. Actually, I go through julie horse insurance services. She's a broker, but every time I end up back with SEIS!
Both they and she have been fantastic with claims, applications, the works. I had a disaster this year - lost a horse - and they were all really personable and understanding.

I am with NFU and I have worked at equine vets and these are one of the best ones for paying out, You have to watch the excess on sum as they can charge 17.5% of the bill as an excess

Carriage house insurance have been reasonable, torarant of my mothers dis orgisation and let us swap no claims bonus from owner to owner and horse to horse! They have paid the £5k claim without any hassle. They were fine about surgory and the people where horsey, freindly and all had there fingers corssed for Dermot. There not a big name but only heard good things about them. Please please get at least £5k vet bills cover - I really wish I had.

AmTrust Equine have been really good. I thought they were new but it turns out that were the underwriters for Equestrian Direct for 2 years before setting up direct which means that they paid all the claims for them. Really friendly, helpful staff and they answer the phone straight away instead of having to sit on hold like i had to with Petplan and KBIS when i was phoning round for quotes. All three of my horses are insured with them now and they offer a really good no claims discount which is good.

Worth a call.

I've been with KBIS for nearly 8 years now and they paid out over £6000 of vets bills in 2003, they have since made some exclusions- as to be expected!
Really nice to deal with too.

Sorry to butt into the post with a question of my own, but I was hoping someone who is with NFU could give me a rough time frame for their "quick" payment?

I currently have a claim that I sent bills/receipts in for at the start of July (5th/6th). I chased this on Friday as I hadn't heard anything and really nedd to refund before next months livery bill as I've already forked out 2months full livery payments when I'm used to grass livery.

They said they had been waiting on a vet report (I know this came in at the start of July also), and it was in a queue to be processed. Getting really worried about paying next months livery though.

Is it worth me pestering or is there nothing that can really be done to speed it up?

I had to have a horse put down on veterinary advice on 7th November 2005. They had paid the vet's bill by the end of November and I received the cheque for the loss of the horse on 23rd December. The cheque for the loss wasn't issued until after I'd spoken to the loss adjuster (by phone - he was really nice) but I received the cheque less than a week after I'd spoken to him. I know that the vet took the best part of a fortnight to send in his report so they paid out to the vets within a week of receiving the report. I reckon that's pretty good.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

That does seem quite quick, which is why I can't understand why it's taking them 3 weeks+ to send stuff out to me. I phoned twice last week (Monday and Friday) and got the same excuse- waiting for report that I knew was in ages ago & that it's being "processed".

Just really worried about my finances for next month as after paying out for horsebox hire (for hospital visit) plus the two months full livery I'm really struggling to pay another full livery bill without the claim cheque from NFU.

Am with Petplan have been for bout 11 yrs now.Have only ever had a one problem over xmas/new yr period when it took them a couple of months to catch up with claims(or that was their excuse).Pay 110 excess they pay rest. Its only Petplan and NFU our vets say they will wait for payment otherwise owner is meant to pay it and claim back from insurance.Thank god with one of them- if I had a spare 5000 lying about wouldn't need insurance.
Found not much in it price ways between NFU and Petplan for same cover.

Thats who im with, and it needs renewing now.

cheekily I got a letter from NFU saying "I see your insurance is up for renewal....." so i have just rang to see what they can offer.

Ive never had to claim. but when looking last year at quotes they were the best one. Though i did get a bit confused when i took a policy out with Julie Andrews and "scotish equestrian" came through

I can recommend Petplan, NFU and Carriagehouse.
Wouldn't go near E&L if they paid ME!!!!
