Can you recommend a good insurer - apart from NFU & Petplan. Have any of you been able to get a rough quote before the horse has actually been vetted? Am having a horse vetted today (so probably jumping the gun a bit), some insurers won't give a quote at all until they've seen the vet report. Thank you.

It depends on what value you are insuring the horse for. If its over 5k they usually want to see the vet report.

Why apart from NFU and Petplan, they are the best in my opinion.

Yes...over £5000 they normally want to see a 5 stage vetting from a vet.

You seem to have ruled out two of the best horse insurers, NFU & Petplan, for some reason. There are others you can try, H&H will have loads in their classifieds however many people have reservations regarding E&L

I have already rang them!!! Petplan did quote me but NFU wouldn't until they see the vet report. The horse is under £5k (£4.5k) but still wouldn't give me a quote. Just wondered if there were any more decent insurers. I understand insurers are a lot stricter now days I just wanted to get a rough idea of what the different covers are & how much the premiums are. My own horse is insured with NFU & my pony with Petplan.

I used to use BEIB (I think they may have changed their name?) who are in Tonbridge. Their policies were very thorough and you could pick and choose levels ie so much for vet, so much for tack etc. I didn't have to have a vetting done, just filled in a declaration of health. Having said that, I never claimed from them and I think that's the only way you can truly tell what an insurer's like. They were on a par with NFU price wise.

I use kbis, didnt need a vetting cert but wasnt insuring him for thousands!I had a sarcoid case come up a yr after and they paid out no questions asked, they really were good!Paid up for the herbal treatment to on vets reccomendation!would highly reccomend them!x

What difference to cover/quote does passing 5* vetting give you? My new boy has passed his vetting and I am in the process of changing cover over to him from other horse. I'm currently with Petplan. Someone told me NFU don't insure single horses, is this true?

NFU do insure single horses. I've had my horse with them for 7 years & my other one with Petplan for 2 years. Both are very good although all insurers are getting much stricting now. I think it does depend on how much you want to insure the horse for as to whether they require a vet report. I'm having a 5 stage vetting done today (now as we speak) feel sick as a pig & am just waiting for the phone call. Petplan didn't require a vet report & can't speak for any of the other insurers. I've heard also that some insurers if you are insuring for over £5k require xrays.
