Horse is annoying me ;)

My loan mare is a box walker too, she is on deep litter shavings but uses a bale every 2 days and is out for half the day!!! I am thinking of getting a couple of rubber mats to put in the middle, pt the banks round the edge and a smaller bed in the middle. Im quite intrigued to try wood pellets but havent got round to it yet!!

Ah, forgot to add, she's on rubber mats too and likes to dig her banks until her entire bed is a wet, poo filled lump in the middle. These horse things, who would have 'em eh?

to your reply on asthma and straw, i to have asthma which is set of by dust. if im around shavings i suffer really badly but our mare is on straw, droppings out everyday and wet once a week and i am perfectly fine with it.

the reason people on here tend to snap at you is because we offer you perfectly reasonable and in most cases good advice but there's always a come back from you "yea but, if but, already tried that" or you shoot us down. try listening to us and take on board what we tell you, then you may find us a bit more receptive to your posts.

I have a very wet smelly mare, Last winter I had her on shavings & semi deep litterd. She got a bale of shavings every week. Every 2 to 3 weeks I scraped the bed back to the base, left it to dry out for a few hours then put a bag of sawdust on top of it then pulled down the rest of the shavings back on top. It made my shavings go much further. It wasnt dusty as I'm also asthmatic & I never had any problems with my pony coughing & farrier was really pleased with state of her feet. May not be an option for you but it helped me out no end.

I beg to differ. Its a horrid life for any horse to live in permanently!! It goes against every single natural part of being a horse![/QUOTE]

I agree. Professionals often do a lot of other things I'd never condone just because they are professionals. . .

Well i was thinking of having matts with a thinner bed? just enought to soak up the wee and poo? :)

I would give her enough to have a soft bed to lie on but not so much that it's a pain to muck out. Also i hate it when people say all horses should live out, one of mine would absolutely hate that.

ETA- Oh yes and my grazing is **** too so i am also one of these cruel people that is having to bring horses in to feed them incredibly expensive hay and haylage ;-P

Can people keep in mind just how old this girl is! Her horse doesn't know she said on a forum that she is annoying her so it hasn't done any harm really. If her turn of phrase gets on anyones nerves, then just chose not to read it.
I must admit i saw the title and thought oh no, she will get slated for this. Do you know the funny thing is that she never retaliates or getds nasty with people for it, i think that shows a great deal of maturity on her part.

as for the problem, my mare was the same on shavings, wet and poo kicked all through it. I have put her on straw again as she is easy on it. I know that isn't an option for op with the asthma thing. Would it make a difference if you wore one of those wee white masks for mucking out? I know a few people iwth asthma who use them when filling nets.

ets yeah straw does smell but i keep a tin of impulse at yard to mask the pong til i get home :D

ditto this.

I have asthma and I don't think deep littering does it any good either. infact I've found shavings to be worse than straw. my advice is to use a dust mask if it's getting too much.

I think the reason often people get annoyed with you is becuase you always have a 'yea but' answer to people who are trying to help you. try to take on board a little more of what people say.

My horse is very very wet in winter, and we have changed his bed to allbed - which is really fantastic stuff!

What also has helped is that his stable opens up onto a little yard that he can wander about in, meaning that he isnt standing on wet for the whole day which can make a bed even wetter.

If you can, could you move her into a large stable if she cant wander about in the yard, or something like a cattle shed stable?

http://www.wessexanimalhealth.co.uk/acatalog/copy_of_Disfectants_and_Stable_Hygiene.html - scroll down to Equi Dry - brilliant stuff. Mine are all on straw and I sweep the floors daily and pop this down and there isn't any pee smell and it soaks up lots of excess pee. I recommend it to everyone to use for beautiful smelling and no pee stables!!! Oh and I don't own the company or anything having just plugged it so much. Also on a different note, my horses are stabled the whole time other than when they are being exercised or having a pick of grass.

Some of you lot need a good spanking. There’s a smiley in the title which to me conveys the fact it’s a tongue in cheek post. Honestly I’m the first one to say if someone is bang out of order, but get a SOH people!
