Any suggestions what I can do to stop horse itching leg wound?

Tonight I put two bandages on in case she got one off. The wound is on the outside of her hind leg so she is biting at it. I'm terrified she will get the dressing off and reopen her already gruesome wound.

I have been treating her other cuts with manuka honey, sea water and purple spray- but the worst one is so big and deep I'm not sure I want to put anything on apart from the pividine the vet has given-but I think it needs something to soothe the itch!

There are human antibiotic creams that have a numbing agent in them (lidocane or some such thing). Go to your local pharmacy, drug store, or whatever you call it in England (I'm in Canada) and ask them. My horse currently has a wound on the outside of a hind leg near the pastern (it's been stitched) and my vet said the human cleaning and wound dressings would be OK to use. I wrap him with non-stick gauze over the wound with the dressing from the vet, two layers of "cotton" (which is really a cotton batting mix) for padding, and then vet wrap on top of that to hold it all on and give some support. He always liked to scratch his back legs together, but this setup is working well and I only have to change the bandages every two to three days.

The purple spray may be irritating to the wound so maybe skip it. Honey has to be raw (unpasteurized) to be helpful to a wound and needs to be changed twice a day to maintain it's effect (the MILD antibiotic effect of hydrogen peroxide production which it has if raw). I once used scarlet oil on a scratch on my hand and discovered how much it STINGS! I haven't tried the purple lotion on myself yet, but I know it is very drying and should not be used on deep or more serious wounds because of this drying effect. A deep would needs to heal from the inside out and needs to be kept moist in order to heal.

Anyways, try the human wound cleansers, ointments and dressings and see if the poor thing isn't a bit more comfortable.

Good luck:)
