Feed it less I hear you cry!

Little bit of history:

Has been getting fit across varied terrain (no serious stones or hills) and was up to being ridden about 2 hours an average day across 2 rides (30mins schooling WT hack in morning, 1.5hrs decent pace hack including mile long canter and about 6.5miles in total length) and still had plently left in tank. He makes it quite clear and displays his tiredness in the form of doing the woe is meeeeee singing and grunting. Body score was about 3.75 but still has apple bum as comes with being a Haflinger.

Diet during this week was 24/7 turnout on okay grass. If going to a show, or for instance when did XC schooling the other week he'd get normal coffee mug dry weight of fast fibre with sunflower oil night before and in the morning.

Had been doing this for about 7 weeks, then went for hack in morning on Monday just gone and was a bit meh, refused to canter but trotted very, very fast (sound), but he'd spotted a loose dog about 200m away so put it down to that. Was happy walking and trotting still. Took him out that evening, got him to canter and it was horrific - all jolting and not comfortable at all but still seemed himself.

Got back to yard and still wasn't right. Asked a friend to trot him up for me and while not 'lame' was short, almost like who us women walk in shoes that have blistered our heel and we daren't make the shoe move and subsequently rub :D

I thought lami attack (had concussive lami in Sept/oct last year) so put him on immediate box rest with hour soaked hay 1st night (due to timing - can't buy ready soaked hay for emergencies :D).

He is currently on a shavings bed which while is not a foot thick is about 3 inches deep but on EVA/cow matting across whole floor. He is having 7kg of 12hr soaked and rinsed hay across the 24 hour period, 1/2 mug dry weight of FF to get in biotin/zinc powder mix, Vit E capsules (1000iu) and magnesium twice a day.

Vet is happy with current set up, farrier has trimmed feet and checked for anything else and is happy with feet. Some bruising grown down from last lot of soreness from concussion.

But even I can see he is putting on the timber. Particularly bad when my non-horsey OH comes home and remarks on it. It's only a week!!

So my question after this particularly long ramble is what next? Can't have him on less feed (7 Kg is 1.5% body weight), or can I?

Help?!

G&T and red velvet cake on offer :D

You can go down to 1% with your vets supervision, I wouldn't feed straw to a laminitic as it can be high in starch and it has usually been sprayed with herbicides/pesticides etc.

You could try feeding a supplement to boost metabolism, Feedmark do Slim Aid that I've found useful in the past.
