Horse is panting even before exercise?

Noticed today that one of out boys was panting a lot, a little before exercise and then a fair bit after a small amount of gentle schooling, even after he'd been just walking for 5mins. He wasn't sweaty/excessively warm and hadn't had a hard work out. If I remember right we had the vet out for it before (5 or so months ago) and he listened to his heart etc and couldn't find much wrong at the time and today has been the first I've really noticed him doing it again.

Will be ringing the vet tomorrow to ask their opinion but in the mean time was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what it could be? Hes in good health otherwise, good condition, not overweight, no colds/coughs.

Sounds like poss virus..mine has had them with no symptons other than increased respiration / lethargy.

do you mean breathing heavy or panting with mouth open?

if panting with mouth open the vet is needed asap as in an emergency visit

meant breathing heavily through nostrils, sorry should have specified!

My horse had similar symptoms a few years back and he was really lethargic and it was a virus, vet gave me ventipulmin but it took a good month until he was back to normal.
