Left hind twists in walk. Not really noticed it before. Had problems all year with this horse. Is it ever 'normal' for the hoof to twist on contact with the ground?
It's common. It's not "normal". It's often because the foot has been shod to look symmetrical instead of balancing the leg above it, which you will can often see if you look closely is not straight. I have one like it myself.
My TB mare did it after a hock iinjury didn't cause her any problems & she wasn't shod behind so wasn't anything to do with shoeing in her case. What does your vet think?
both of ours do, different hinds. In fact while on the beach the other week I was studying foot prints (yes am going do-lally) to work out which one it was on the unshod one because all of his other prints were so flat.. just every fourth was twisting.
It is the side he has a less than symmetrical foot although he has had no known problems with that leg/foot/side in general. Foot has always been asymmetrical and was allowed to stay that way even when shod.
Mare twists her right hind, while moving wide behind too. I am not sure whether it is because she is generally confirmationally not great or whether that is a remenant from an accident that we know she had as a 4 yo before we had her (which required extended box rest) but I can't remember which leg has the most scars!
