My boy is fed TopSpec Senior, CoolCondition Cubes, unmolassed sugarbeet and magnitude calmer.

He still hasnt put on a great deal of weight and he is still spooky and nappy! He is 17 and cannot tolerate any alfalfa (sends him off his trolley)

Any suggestions?

I'm a big fan of Dodson & Horrell's High Fibre Cubes. I've tried my lad on lots of different feeds before settling on these and he was very silly on everything, particularly Top Spec's Lite Balancer. In fact my only complaint with the High Fibre Cubes is that he sometimes lacks energy when hacking (which is far, far preferable to the monster he used to be!)
Then stick with the sugar beet to help with the weight gain. Do you have good grazing? It is the best thing in the world for putting on weight but then again it seems to make my boy very buzzy!

I've found without exception that TS products light up my horses. I used the Condition cubes this year as an experiment, without TS Balancer, and result was rather hyper mare.

I'd go with the D and H as suggested, or Spillers HF cubes are even lower starch than D and H (10%). You'll probably find you can feed more low starch feed with no bad effects.

What is in the calmer? Seeing as spooky and nappy are symptoms of magnesium deficiency and he reacts to alfalfa, I would suspect magnesium deficiency(alfalfa effects absorption of magnesium)

I ddint think there was anything in TopSpec Balancer to cause fizziness??

What about switching the Cool and Condition cubes to something like Outshine to up the oil content to put on weight. This combination worked with my chap.

And a good ole dollop of Dr Green - grass!

We are keeping weight on our retired cob mare by feeding her A&P's Calm & Condition and grassnuts. I would recomend the grassnuts. When our supplier couldn't get any before we ran out, we gave her speedi-beet as an alternative and she did drop a bit of weight. Just a word of caution though, an alternative local supplier sold me lucerne nuts as grass nuts until I realised and took them back. He said 'that's what we always get'. That supplier is really a farm which has diversified into equine feedstuffs. My usual supplier is a knowledgeable tack and feed shop, so knows that alfalfa and lucerne are the same thing.

Thanks all

the magnitude calmer is magnesium oxide...

..may or may not apply to your chap but my mare went bonkers on unmolassed SB. Took her on and off it a few times + it was definitley that. When I spoke to Feedline at D+H (as I also feed their Hi Fibre Nuts) was told she could have a sugar intolerance even though the unmollassed SB has very little sugar in it, it was enough to tip her over the edge!
