thank you! after chatting with a load of people I do feel a lot better (I had never realised how common hock injections were until now)
Hopefully if he responds to injections well, my coach has offered to give me groundwork lessons - we are lucky to have off road hills that the vet said would be great for long reining him round once I’ve got going to really help build his core and back end - so I’m going to make sure I put plenty of time into it
A physio who specialises in rehab and posture is also helpful. I've had one out recently and we spent most of the time looking at how my youngster moves and discussing the best exercises to help him. I can do the soft tissue massage type work myself but having a fresh pair of eyes was invaluable

I think you did a good job following your gut and hopefully many years of ridden work to come.

I’m not the OP but my mare went to the vet in October 2022 being “not quite right”, physio found nothing major just a little sore behind saddle and slightly stiff hocks.

Vet said hocks were okay for her age (19) but back was sore so we x-rayed. 4x kissing spines. Treated with physio and medication for 10 months but behaviour returned, so October 2023 she had 4x ligament snips. Still rehabbing now and awaiting blood test results to decide how to treat her hocks, according to vet they aren’t clinically too bad but physio and I feel that treating them will help her work from behind when I get back on (which should be soon!).

The vet route hasn’t been as expensive as I thought (large vet hospital) and hopefully we can finish off her ridden years as our best years yet. Our goal is to win a dressage rosette!
