Hi,

I have been studying for my degree for the past 6 years and have completed 15 of 16 modules.

My last module asks me to identify an issue/problem within the horse industry and research it.

As horse owners I am asking everyone to send feedback on their opinions. Any issues or problems that you think would benefit further research please let me know.

Thanks

Amy

What about something comparing barefoot/shod horses? Depending on the purpose of the module, you could go down a few different routes; cost comparison/difference in stride length/popularity in different disciplines?

Or something along the lines of the current news about more horses being lame than we're aware of; doing a study of a sample of horses in various disciplines if you have them available to you, or if not, a selection of vetting reports both passed and failed (anonymized of course) from your local equine vet.

I did mine on the use of stable mirrors and the effect on the horses heart rate in comparison with the behaviours they showed... I wish i could go back to uni to do more studies like these - i'm very jealous of you!! :D

Hi,

Thankyou for your feedback, I agree that it would make interesting research to compare shod/unshod horses. I was talking to the farrier last week about unshod horses which wear boots. There are several angles here.

My research module gaev me free range to choose a topic, research and report on it. For this module I have to identify an issue/problem amongst horse owners. One area I was intersested in in colic and the awareness of it and its causes. But horse owners have to feel it is an issue. It would be interesting to get hold of some vet reports on this, not sure how amenable they would be.

Thanks

How about the import of horses from the continent and it's impact on the swamp fever particularily horses from places like Rumainia that get passported in other EC countries before coming here ( that was the cause of the outbreak up here).

Road Safety for riders is an ongoing issue and making drivers aware, the need for off road and bridleways is essential for a lot of riders, I know around me there are bridleways but some of them are blocked. I could talk to BHS about the issues surrounding this.

Importing and quarantine of horses is an interesting subject relating to health & welfare, and how it affects us. I could look into the legislation surrounding this.

Thanks for your feedback.
