I started my new job last week, I still haven't handed my notice in for my current employer.
I'll be honest here...I really hate my current job and that's why I decided to change. This new job has MUCH better hours but it's ridiculously underpaid. I know that horsey jobs aren't particularly well paid but I mean...If I work over my hours, I'm not paid any extra and I'm on a pay that is significantly below minimum wage. There's a strange atmosphere there with the current staff, they seem to look down on you because they've been there for years and I've only just started there. They go off and so their own thing and then I'm just left.
I don't know what to do. I need at least what I'm currently earning to cover bills but I won't be at this new job. I guess I just assumed they would pay for the extra hours I'm putting in. I told my current employer that I'd be handing my notice in this week though and I'm so scared, I literally feel so frightened of what he's going to say as he's so picky about things. I'm desperate to get out of there but equally I don't think I can carry on with this new job as I'm dreading going in next.
I really don't know what to do.

Why do you hate your current job so much that you want to leave, is it purely because of the hours? The new job doesn't sound much better and I don't think you should stick with it unless you think things are going to improve. Without knowing much about the situation I think you need to sit down with your current employer and explain why you aren't happy and think about how the issues can be resolved, rather than leave straight away.

Agree with above, you should also be questioning your new employer and asking for minimum wage? Unless you get free accommodation/livery etc? It sounds like starting this new job was a bit of a rush desicion. You need to sit down with current employer and talk through why you aren't happy, could you do less hours etc. And/or talk to new employer about wage, overtime etc. If the new job is not what you imagined then maybe stick to your old job whilst you find something else? I have worked on yards and never been paid overtime, but I have at least received min wage. Good luck!

WHY do people do it?? Working with horses IS hard work - but it is ILLEGAL to employ staff below NMW! I have 4 full time girls and a cuple of part-timers - they all get a little bit (and it IS little) above NMW - and they DO get overtime if expected to work extra hours (which is rarely needed.) Yes, it costs me, but I have good staff and they stay!

I don't understand..... you already started your new job, last week?

But, you haven't handed your notice in with the old job yet?

So, are you currently doing two jobs?

More questions.....

Your old job had "bad" hours but paid well?

Your new job supposedly had better hours for less pay, but in fact you are doing more hours than you thought, and not being paid for them?

You hated the old job, but find the people at the new job not welcoming?

If you need the current job's salary in order to meet your bill payments, then you need to hang on to your current job until you find something with comparable wages, otherwise you will struggle and may get into debt. Tbh, the new job doesn't sound great - they dont even pay nmw, expect you to do extra hours for nothing and you are already dreading going back there.
If I were you, I'd sit down with your current boss and see if you can sort out your differences there. You can always continue to look elsewhere if you are really unhappy.
