Hi, I'm looking at buying a 16.2hh ISH who isn't turned out as the horse jumps the fences. The fences aren't that good... does anyone know if the horse was turned out with other horses of a similar size, with good new fences (approx 1.5m tall) whether the horse would be able to be turned out without me worrying that the horse has excaped and hurt itself or would I need to keep it stabled too?

Thanks

Most horses can be turned out safely, plenty to eat, company and to make it safer if you feel the need a line of tape a metre or two inside the post and rail should prevent him from feeling the need to. I would probably stable at night until I got to know he was really settled.

I've only known one horse that couldn't be turned out, she was generally scared of open spaces.

She would run though any fencing, resulting in many injuries. Even if Urdu Nt give, she would keep trying. As soon as she went out she would start sweating and just went crazy.didn't matter on the field size or height/type of the fence, or if she had company or not.

In the end she was kept very happily in a big indoor barn.

my 17.2hh ISH jumps fences he has jumped the 5ft electric fencing rails but is turned out 24/7 but if it defiantly jumps the fence every time it is turned out i would walk away - its dangerous for the horse and people, mine stays in if he has grass and friends in with him but on his own he has jumped fences and a 4 ft fence with a ditch either side and he could have broken legs doing that so he is always got quite a bit of grass or hay but he will never be trusted so the back of his field has an 8 ft hedge row and then there is 5 ft electric fencing all the way around with high voltage going through it (it REALLY hurts if it gets you and it occasionally jumps about 2 cm so he doesnt go near it. he is also in the middle of a 25acres of land with large amounts of grass so he isnt likely to go walk abouts... but you can never trust them so tbh you wont know until you try it - good luck!

I knew a 13.2hh pony that couldn't be turned out. He would jump any fence (decent height P&R and 5 bar gates). He didn't care if he had food and always had company. He just always jumped out! Tried electric taping the top of the fence, everything. He coud clear it or he didn't seem to care if he brought it down! In the end they built him a small turnout pen with those really tall electric fence posts, and made the pen small enough that he could get a run up to jump out.

Was no life though. Felt very sorry for him. But was the only thing they could do.

Sounds like its just figured out how easy it is with small fences! :p. You could try running a tape through your fencing high up with brightly coloured pieces of small flappy material securely attached at intervals? may keep her away from it. You may find it isnt a problem at all with bigger fences.

I would probably personally try her out with the fence as usual and another sane horse to keep her company and watch her like a hawk for the first time (but discreetly so she/he cant see you). Start with bringing her in to a stable at night/when you arent around or no-one else is so you dont worry then providing there are no problems, slowly increase the amount of time she/he spends out :).

If it is a recurring problem I would definetely try a round pen with 6ft+ fences if there is no way to realistically increase your fence height as I dont personally like them being kept in constantly.

RE increasing fence height what about a couple of rows of electric TAPE along the top of the fence stretched between some vertical support attached to the wooden fence. You could probably increase your fence size by another 1 1/2 feet this way and providing it is electrified stretched taught and clearly visible with no huge gaps between each row I dont forsee it being a problem (I see loads of wooden fencing in horse fields with electric wire attached on an angle to the inside to stop them chewing the fence/leaning over. It would be safer than standard electric fencing used in fields and the bigger the fence looks the less likely she is to jump it.

Good luck :)

Ned will jump the fence if his friends aren't there, does your horse have company?
I can't really offer much help, but I hope you find a way to solve it!

Could you put electric fencing inside the existing fence, a bit away from it so that the electric fencing adds to the width of the fence so she/he is less likely to jump a high and wide fence? just a thought :)

Sorry but I'd leave well alone tbh. I had one of these and luckily she was at a posh yard in Windsor with hedging but in the end they refused to turn her out at all. This put enormous pressure on me to ride every day. The scopy ones can easily clear 1.5 metres with no rider weight. Worse still if you electric fence then there is always the possibility of her not making it and getting badly injured. Think long and hard.

The YO might be more bothered about an escaping horse than adding some electric fencing.

Or the YO may decide afer a while they don't want your horse on the yard because it is more hassle than it's worth. Have seen it happen.

I would probably walk away.

Hi

We have a 15hh ish ISH type who jumps for fun! He's like Houdini and can escape from anywhere.
Last winter he jumped onto a frozen lake & proceeded to canter straight across - the lake is about 18ft deep and he had a HW rug on - I dread to think what would have happened to him if it hadn't held...
He will jump in to or out of fields as the mood takes him - whether it be onto soft ground or concrete (or indeed ice!) and as far as we can tell he actually quite enjoys it!
The only thing that can keep him in 1 place (and even then it's no guarantee) is all the other horses being in 1 field with him - he very rarely will jump away from them tho he has now 'taught' my big boy that he can also jump most things in his way and so he now has a partner in crime!
It's a huge worry and I don't think any of us would knowingly take on one the same again tho saying that he's super talented so maybe we would...
I have it on good authority that Tom Quigley was much the same in his younger days! ;) :D
Good luck, whatever you decide

OMG - total nightmare, I couldn't sleep at night!

My old jumping pony used to be a devil for jumping out, regardless of how many friends or how much food he had. In the end we hammered metal electric fence posts into the top of post and rail fencing and had three lines of electric tape. Top row at about 10foot high. Then had it electrified off the mains, soon stopped him!
