My mare was kicked in the field on Weds. When I brought her in her near side hind was very swollen and hot. I trotted her up-she was sound, cold hosed her and bandaged back legs. I called the vet who came out first thing Thurs morning. He was worried about the swelling and didn't want to get her out of the stable as he didn't want to do anymore damage just in case. He said he hoped it was just bruising, but we would have to wait 10 days for the swelling to go down before he could xray, in case of a hairline fracture. She is now on bute, antibiotics and box rest. I have been ice packing it twice a day. She is bandaged at night and has magnetic wraps on during the day. Is there anything else I can do?

I'm worrying myself silly now, and am paranoid as the swelling is so bad, thats she's fractured it. Has anyone else had any experiences of this. How quickly did the swelling go down? I'm feeling sorry for myself as I've got so much planned for the summer, and I've got a horrible feeling its not going to happen

I had a horse that had a field accident, she was kicked in the hock. She walked into the stable and the vet advised she be tied up while the swelling went down. They suspected a star fracture. A couple of days later someone let her loose in the box. She lay down to roll, got up and the fracture exploded. She was put down.

You are right to be careful with your horse. Wait for the X-ray and don't take unnecessary risks. Be careful with the ice, you don't want to burn her skin and cause more problems.

Oh god Tracey, thats awful.

I'm only ice packing it as I can't get her out of the stable to use the hose, but am very cautious about how long I leave it on for.

I am not 100% sure if magnetic devices near a fracture is a good thing or a bad thing - can anyone advise on that? It could be that she has a bone chip as my horse was kicked badly on the inside of his stifle (incredible I know but nevertheless he didn't do it to himself) and he had a small bone chip. His leg was very swollen. My friends horse also had a very swollen leg with a bone chip too and two other horses I know of have had the same although in my friends case her horses bone chip could not be reabsorbed into his body like my horse and the others so he had to have an operation to remove it. Both horses have an extremely good prognosis and my horse is back in work (my friends horse is only two). So it could be a bone chip. It could also be a hairline fracture in which case you need to follow your vets advice to the tee and wait until the xrays can confirm either way. I know its easy said but please try not to worry too much, legs can swell with no breaks as much as they can if there are breaks.

Rather than ice packs I used an 'Aerborn' cool gaiter for a tendon injury - it was fab. You leave it in the freezer and then strap it on for approx 20 mins, but it will defrost to room temp after that time anyhow so don't have to worry about burns.

Thanks Sidney I've just looked up the Aerborn gaiter and it looks a good idea, also nice and cheap, so going to pop to the tack shop and see if I can get one.

Applecart, I just googled some information about magnets and fractures and as far as I can tell there is nothing wrong with this. Many people use them to aid healing. I'm glad yours were success stories. How long did yours take until they were back in full work?

Think Bailey had 6 weeks box rest with the last two weeks as walking in hand (very dangerous!). Then couple of weeks of walking leading to trotting so I suppose about 2 1/2 months all in all. Painted DMSO from the vet onto it which helped a great deal.

my horse had a hairline fracture last november, was on box rest for about 6 weeks , then walking for yonks ! i used a pulsating magnet on the fracture , from FMB magnets, twice a day for ten minutes. the vet could not believe how well and how quickly the fracture healed, i also put him on cloudy apple cider vinegar, I don't know if the magnet did help but it certainly didn't do any harm !

Amy I am using magnets on my broken leg!!! and today my surgeon is shocked at how well it has healed and puts it down to the blood circulation caused by the magnets!
Hope Rosie is well and I will pop up the yard Thursday and Sat.. hopefully I can catch you!!
