My bloody mare that’s just came into season is obviously feeling brace and double barrelled my gelding in the field tonight for the first time, normally she just runs away from him when he threatens.
She must have caught him as straight after it he limped behind for a few steps but is now walking and trotting fine. He has a small cut on his leg which I assume is from her catching him.
This has never happened before, I don’t think I need to phone the vet for a cut this small?? Would you just wait and see how he is in the morning? Like I say he’s not lame now it was just the few limping steps after tht concerned me IMG_1779.jpegIMG_1780.jpeg

In that situation, I would cold hose tonight and tomorrow. Give a bute if you have one to help with any swelling (I know this is a much debated subject, but my vet is happy for me to have a small supply for situations like this). Then see how he is over the next couple of days. It wasn't a kick, but my previous mare whacked herself there on a gate, and it did swell up quite a lot - I think that's fairly typical for injuries in that area. Fingers crossed it's something easily healed. At least you can see it - when they are lame and you can't see anything, it always seems worse.

Thanks guys, it was just the few lame steps that worried me thts when I knew she had caught him the bitch!!!
It’s an odd place but I presume it’s when they both double barrled each other? Who knows… good thing is she doesn’t have shoes on.
Have cold hosed etc luckily there is no heat or swelling right now, will see what it is looking like in the morning. Hopefully just superficial..

Just be a bit wary. From experience.
I had one kick another and the mark was tiny. He was slightly lame. If your still worried and the lameness doesn’t match the mark I’d actually call the vet incase
He isn’t lame anymore and trotted up sound about 30 minutes after, he was lame for about 2 steps afterwards but seems to be ok now. Will phone the vet in the morning if he is lame coming in
He is still in the field so hopefully won’t swell up too much…

Is that first cut over a joint? If so always a vet call.
Hey it’s the same cut just different angle.
This is mega naive but I don’t know if it’s over the joint? Does it look it from the photos.
He cut his leg literally in the same place just to the left a bit after running XC once, seen the vet at the event who just advised keep it clean etc so was kind of hoping this would be a similar situation

My mare is the same at the moment. She's unleashed full witch mode on the Shetland all day and he's normally quite assertive! I'm hoping he doesn't have a similar fate to your boy.

I actually thought she was colicing earlier she just seemed off until I seen her squirting at a neighbouring horse and double barrelling my gelding 🙈 then it all made sense…
Hopefully the Shetland will be able to get out the way quicker than my boy did 😂

Morning all

Thank you all so so much for your replies last night!
Up early this morning as was stressing out over his leg!! I have clipped where it was cut( as you can see from my dodgy clip by this morning you couldn’t tell where the cut even was) there is no heat and he’s walking/trotting fine.
It looks like it has just grazed the skin not cut right through, what do you think?
I have cold hosed to give it a wee clean and put some silver cream on it, do you think it would require the vet or good to keep going as we are?
Thank you all

I would never give bute in a situation like this .You need to know if it’s painful .
OP that wound is looking great .
If he’s sound and has no localised pain when you push round the wound just keep an eye .
Thank you, I never gave bute or Danillon or anything that required feeding as to not upset the field dynamic anymore last night 😂 so that was it this morning no anti inflams etc.
he doesn’t seem to be sore so fingers crossed! Thank you again

If it is on a joint I would get a vet.

Even for something as small as that? I haven’t ever had any experience with cuts over joints so this is all a bit new to me
I would check out the experience of anyone not known to you giving advice on a forum @Horsegirl25 there is lots of good advice given and some less good. Small cuts can sometimes lead to bigger issues but not always so as previously said definitely best to keep an eye out. Some vets are happy for you to send a photo and this might be an option if you’re worried.

Thank you both, I will give them a ring and see if it’s possible to send a photo.
I think I would feel a bit silly asking them to come out for something so small, so they can decide that for themselves. Thank you all again for your responses.
