Arrived at the yard the 2 nights ago to find out that Millie had been caught in the corner of the field and double barrelled by one of the other mares in the morning.
No major cuts other than hoofprint shaped hairloss and it all seemed to be in the fleshy area of her bum/quarters, nothing on the lower legs, thank god.
No lameness in walk, tho I didn't trot her up as it wouldn't be surprising if she was a bit sore from the bruising anyway.
Fair bit of heat but no major swelling. So, cold hosed and liberally applied some arnica gel to help with the bruising and left her in her normal routine to go out in the day in at night.
Asked YO to reapply gel in the morning and came up to cold hose and reapply gel in the evening.
Now, whilst she hasn't been lame in walk, when I got to the field last night to get her in I noticed she was a bit lame when trotting around the field before catching her (minx didn't want to be caught). She seems well in herself and tho the area is still a bit warm to touch I have continued to cold hose and apply the gel to help with the bruising as there is going to be a significant amount.
Now, I bet you are wondering why I'm posting if I'm not that worried... well.
On the first night on inspecting all the scrapes and bumps I noticed a bump right on the point of her bum, just beside her tail and I'm worrying (now that I've had some time to ponder it more) that actually I should get the vet to check her because looking at a picture of the horses skeleton the bump is about the place where the very top of the femur is (so I guess equivalent to our hip??).
In this picture: http://www.akfentertainment.com/akfpic/horse_skeleton.gif I think it calls it the Tuber Ischii (it's hard to read).
What are peoples thoughts on this, should I let things settle down a bit more and continue monitoring or get the vet out to examine and no doubt want to scan/xray(if xrays are possible in that area)... I guess I'm worried there may be a hairline fracture or something tho by the looks of the injuries it would probably have been a glacing blow as there is no cut in this are, just a warm bump.
Most of the scrapes are on the side of her quarters so guessing the mare was 90 degrees to her when kicking her..
Hope this all makes sense and thanks for reading this far..
