Arrived at the yard the 2 nights ago to find out that Millie had been caught in the corner of the field and double barrelled by one of the other mares in the morning.

No major cuts other than hoofprint shaped hairloss and it all seemed to be in the fleshy area of her bum/quarters, nothing on the lower legs, thank god.
No lameness in walk, tho I didn't trot her up as it wouldn't be surprising if she was a bit sore from the bruising anyway.

Fair bit of heat but no major swelling. So, cold hosed and liberally applied some arnica gel to help with the bruising and left her in her normal routine to go out in the day in at night.
Asked YO to reapply gel in the morning and came up to cold hose and reapply gel in the evening.
Now, whilst she hasn't been lame in walk, when I got to the field last night to get her in I noticed she was a bit lame when trotting around the field before catching her (minx didn't want to be caught). She seems well in herself and tho the area is still a bit warm to touch I have continued to cold hose and apply the gel to help with the bruising as there is going to be a significant amount.

Now, I bet you are wondering why I'm posting if I'm not that worried... well.

On the first night on inspecting all the scrapes and bumps I noticed a bump right on the point of her bum, just beside her tail and I'm worrying (now that I've had some time to ponder it more) that actually I should get the vet to check her because looking at a picture of the horses skeleton the bump is about the place where the very top of the femur is (so I guess equivalent to our hip??).
In this picture: http://www.akfentertainment.com/akfpic/horse_skeleton.gif I think it calls it the Tuber Ischii (it's hard to read).

What are peoples thoughts on this, should I let things settle down a bit more and continue monitoring or get the vet out to examine and no doubt want to scan/xray(if xrays are possible in that area)... I guess I'm worried there may be a hairline fracture or something tho by the looks of the injuries it would probably have been a glacing blow as there is no cut in this are, just a warm bump.
Most of the scrapes are on the side of her quarters so guessing the mare was 90 degrees to her when kicking her..

Hope this all makes sense and thanks for reading this far..

I would think if she is slightly lame she has bruised the muscle in that area, which will understandably be sore as hell!!!
the lump, if next to, or near the hoofprint, I think will just be swelling/oedema from the kick, if its slightly further away from the hoofprint, then it may be something different in which case, call the vet and ask opinions!!! worst they can say is your a worry wart

hehe

Just keep doing what your doing! and tell her to stop being a pain and come in when called

My mare was booted in exactly the same place, and was a bit sore but fine . A fractured hip in a human leaves no doubt as to the diagnosis , I suspect it would be the same in a horse . fractured ischial tuberosities usually occur in osteoporotic old ladies .

thanks for the reassurance. Not nearly as much heat in her bum last night when hosing tho the bump is still same size. Going to give her till Monday and see how we are going.

It's frustrating as we were just about to start work. Silly accident prone horse, needs bubble wrapping!

Lucy: yes she does need to do as she's told and come in when called! Funnily enough she has been better since being booted, so long as no other horses are around. Think she wants to come in but is very wary of the other horses! Understandably so as I expect she's black and blue under all that hair!

my boy was kicked in the bum it got bruised and thena couple of weeks later it get bigger and bigger so called vets and it was a hymertomea so i had to have it drained and flushed he had to go on pain killers and anti inflamms so just keep an very close eye on it!

Thanks, yes, will definitely be keeping an eye on it. Was the lump firm or soft to prod.
Millie's is soft and when prodding it *gently* she wasn't too cranky on it where as previous nights she was moving away from the touch..

It's by no means a huge lump but I'm just concious of it's positioning... luckily she didn't get kicked on the tail/dock as I can imagine that would be VERY sore and probably need some sort of treatment...

I do wonder if rather than being kicked on this bit she might have backed into the fence attachment that the electric fencing runs through when trying to escape as there are no grazes or anything just a lump..

Hopefully it's just a case of time will heal... fingers crossed.

Thats true it could be a haematoma! no idea as obv not seen it! but I would seriously doubt it being a fractured tuber ishii... god Im a vet student and cant rememebr how to spell it!!! lol

I got thrown into a fence post by a horse and got a massive haematoma, and although its sore, I didnt break anything, sounds in a similar position to your horses lump too!

we can MATCH!

Lol!
I think I am worrying that I wasn't worrying enough at the start if you get what I mean! LOL
I expect if it were fractured she's be in a lot more pain but you do hear of fractures (hairline) not showing till days later.
Friends pony got a kick on the cannon bone and didn;t swell up till a few days (maybe a week, I can;t remember it was a while ago) later and turned out to be a hairline fracture and was on boxrest for ages...
Tho thinking about it, it's the femur after all which is pretty strong and she does have a fair bit of padding in that area *like her mum!* so think i'm probably worrying unnecessarily.

Would a haematoma be firm or squishy? It's basically blood isn't it? I'm guessing the cold hosing is still good and maybe a bit of a massage? Oh the things we do for our horses... I can imagine the comments..."is she really massaging her horses bum!!"
LOL

editted to say: meant to take piccies last night but forgot, bump is only raised from the normal surface by about a cm at most..

Ye to fracture the femur would take a serious SERIOUS wacking!!! and im sure if there is a fracture either a) it will balloon up or b) she will go really lame!

We all have extra padding round there!!! obviously god wanted womens femurs and hips to be protected

hehe

Haematoma is slightly squishy, but kind of firmer end of squishy (if that makes sense) due to pressure. yes it is just filled up with blood that should drain away on its own (so im told!!!) but sometimes they need draining! Mine is still 2 years on and not gone completely, but hopefully she will work her butt more than me and so hers will go if it is one!

Cold hosing is good yes, at least for the bruising and heat even if it doesnt alter the lump! Massage helps the blood flow so again, good!
and who cares if you massage her bum! I fall asleep on my horses arse all the time!! (until he farts..... then I move, really fast!)

Had a good prod last night and think it might be a heamatoma so just going to keep an eye for the min. She has improved but is still a bit lame so continuing with the gel and butt rubs.

Anyone think a bit of gentle exercise would help with the bruising. Long reining not ridden I'm thinking..
