Horse killed ducklings

We had a horse at our yard that would kick a dog if it strayed into its field. My horse isn't particularly keen on dogs and would possibly nip if he had the chance.

I agree, it is common. My old gelding killed mice and rats in his stable. He shared his stable with a black cat though.... Often seen snoozing side by side. He was good with dogs except jack Russell's as all they did was bark at him and try and rip his nose off. I think he would stamp in one if he had the chance.

My new girl i do worry about. Often seen chasing the farmers wife's cats! I have also seen her graze peacefully while pigeons eat bugs around her then calculatingly try and grab one!

I can believe a horse would kill ducklings. As lovely as horses are, I don't think they are benevolent.

More common than I thought then! Thinking about it, although she is absolutely fine out hacking, Doll can get quite nasty towards dogs going near her on the yard, but so far has never got one. I think the yard cat sleeps in her stable with her though as every morning, there is a perfect cat size circle made in the back corner of her bed, and he is often sitting outside her stable when I get there in the morning.

My mare killed sparrows in her stable and when she had the foal with her killed a chicken, recently she got a magpie in the field. Otherwise she is a lovely gentle mare.

An old hunter of mine was embarrassing during cubbing (before the ban I hasten to add!) If a fox tried to make his escape from a covert, Bramble would spot it before anyone else and lunge at it with his teeth! He couldn't go in a field with sheep because he'd pick them up and throw them (if a mouthful of wool didn't come out first) and woe betide any dog who went into his field!

I wonder if there is a post ban clause that covers this? You may not be allowed to let hounds at the fox anymore but what about horses? Could be the perfect solution to post ban hunting. Trained killer horses :D

Years ago, when I was still in school in the US, a loose dog got into the paddock where my horse lived. There were about a dozen horses in said paddock. What subsequently occurred as an interesting study of equine behaviour, though it did not end well for the poor dog. The horses chased it and then encircled it and the lead mare attacked it and stomped it. Then each horse in the herd had a go at charging in from the circle and stomping the dog. Eventually a person was able to get in there and chase off the horses and rescue the dog. I can't remember if it survived.

Mine has chased dogs out of her field before.

A fellow livery at a yard I used to stay at had an excitable collie puppy that she would let run around. All the horses at the barn were pretty tolerant of it, though. Then one time I had my horse tied in front of the barn, I was standing about two meters from horse chatting to someone, collie bounced up to me and jumped on me, as puppies do, and horse's ears flattened, tail whisked, and she raised a hind hoof and hunched her hindquarters. The dog's owner put it back in her car. I thought my horse's reaction, protective almost, was cute in a scary way. I wouldn't have wanted to be caught in the cross-fire if she'd thrown a kick at the dog.

Another time she nearly killed a dog who thought horses were just big dogs and was jumping up at her face, trying to lick her and get her to play like dogs do with each other. Horse was not impressed.

There is a field on our yard that the farmer won't put sheep/lambs into, a gelding used to chase the sheep around and was once seen picking a lamb up in his teeth and throwing it around... :(

A piglet was stamped to death by my friends gelding after escaping from the pig pens and venturing into the horses meadows :-( we could not rescue it quick enough.

Anybody read Deadly Equines? Some interesting stuff in there. I find it ever so slightly worrying that horses can digest animal protein.

Maybe they're just hungry and fancy something a bit different for tea?

Especially when you consider what they can do to a Swede!

I'll be making sure I feed my share horse exactly on time from now on!!

I want to know where you can get these rat-killing horses from? Our horses are useless when it comes to that!!!

One of our stallions picks up sheep, tosses them then tries to roll on them! When he was a foal I had one of those rabbit trimmed hats which he nicked one day and savaged it !! It was in bits by the time I rescued it. He also picks leafs of hay up in his jaws, rears and tosses it about too!
Strange Beastie!!

That is so sad :(

I find alot of dead birds in my field. Although I have no idea which Horse is doing it (if it is one of them that is) as I have never caught them in the act! I doubt it would be mine though, she is very good with other animals. She shared her stable with the yard cat and plays with one of the local dog walkers Cavilier King Charles Spaniel.

Thats terrible, I didn't think horses would do that:(. Theres a gelding at my yard who chases dogs out of his field and one day my little sheltie was going through his field he went for her. She ran under the fence into my field and Sophie galloped in front my dog and reared up at the gelding. She was protecting my dog! Bless her.:)
