Horse killed in car accident

:( I live in Braybrooke, and was out on my pony yesterday am, I must have just missed it by an hour. It is a horrible road, but unfortunately you have to go along it to get onto some of the bridleways and onto the old railway line.

People drive fast along there, its used as a rat run for many getting to and from Desborough, and worst culprits, some, not all parents taking kids to out of village schools!! Unbelieveably its a national speed limit road, its not a "track" and has many passing places, but it is has a lot of blind bends.

Thoughts are with everyone involved, i think I know the people as have probably passed them several times hacking over the years.

Do you know if the tethered horse was recovered to a more appropriate "holding" place? :( I know your options are limited with two riders to get to hospital, but leaving a horse tethered is just asking for a second accident, IMO :(

RIP horse, hope riders are recovering well and that anybody in thei vehicle isn't too badly hurt either.

She would of only been tethered if she even was as my friend has not even mentioned her being "tethered" to anything plus i've no idea what with but she was taken to a farm close by to where it happened and was later collected and is now back in the field with just some cuts the accident was horrific now i know full details. I keep my horses with theres and i just cannot believe what has happened. Also a local livery yard owner witnessed everything happen infront of her eyes and she arranged everything and cannot be thanked enough for what she organised for them.

These people are the kindest people you could meet and are truely shaken and gutted by what has happened because of some stupid speeding driver thankfully the horse was killed almost instantly and her husband is still in hospital awaiting to see if he needs an operation.

Unfortunatly the driver was unhurt and probably hasn't even learnt his lesson i just hope his statisfied that his killed two peoples beloved horse who are like children to them its like loosing a family member.

RoyalPolo - please do pass all our thoughts and best wishes to your friends. How utterly horrific but unfortunately not uncommon. It happened to a friend of mine in our nearest village, one horse was killed at the scene, the second pts a week later and the rider paralysed for a year - she is now walking and active again luckily.

I feel so desperately sorry for your friends xx

I am so sorry for your friend, I hope her husband makes a full recovery and that he can get over this tragic accident.

I also hope they throw the book at the driver, who, although I expressed sympathy for on the other post, having read your report I no longer feel any sympathy for whatsoever.

I'm so sorry to hear of this tragic accident. Please pass on my good wishes for a speedy recovery to your friend and her husband and their horse and run free other much loved horse.

Are the police likely to prosecute? Especially if there where witnesses?

I talked to my friend this morning and passed on all the good wishes she has from our fellow work friends and told her that also even people on here where thinking of her and her husband at this awful time she really appreciates everyones good wishes.

Hopefully the police will prosecute for dangerous driving.

My thoughts are with everyone :( I cannot imagine the pain they must all be going through.

Our yard is located just off a lane and although it's not busy, people do speed up and down. On one particular blind corner someone sped round and hit a horse and rider (wearing hi-viz). The rider was knocked unconscious and to this day the driver has never apologised. Fortunately everyone recovered.

It's really upsetting - I wish there was a 'safe place' for everyone to ride.

Please pass on my reguards, I Hope your friend and her husband gets through this tough time together. I couldn't cope with the lose off one off my horses in this way. I also hope the driver gets what he deserves.

Thanks RoyalPolo - so very sorry and send warm wishes and kind thoughts to your friends and hope that her husband makes a full recovery.

Thanks for the update,an equine owners worst nightmare!Unfortunately as most of the riding/driving tracks have been taken over by other users this is going to happen more often until we are given more off road access that goes somewhere.
Maybe when there's no oil etc left people might appreciate the use of equines!

Appreciate the update Royal Polo and wish your friend and her husband a speedy recovery - its everyones nightmare and must be awful to a: have lost their horse like that but b: can't imagine what they went through when the crash actually happened.

It said the car was badly damaged, which unfortunately only serves to underline just how quickly it was going.

Not shutting the stable door etc etc but if there are that many yards around - could the council at least consider putting up a sign warning about horses? it "just" might make someone slow down.

Hope the driver is prosecuted too.

The livery owner who witnessed the accident is my trainer, she was in shock and had her young daughter in the car with her. That road is an absolute rat run, people drive as fast as they do on the main road running from harboorough which is 3 times the size.
I had a few near misses on it, apparently the driver actually over took a car which pulled over to let them pass and hit them head on, just showing how absolutely irresponsible he/she was.
RIP to the horse and get well soon to the rider.

I really really hope he/she is prosecuted, their thoughtless impatient actions have killed a horse and badly injured a man, I cannot possibly write here what I would like to do to that driver :mad::mad:

RIP poor horse and hope the riders and other horse are all making a good recovery.
Hopefully karma will catch up on the moron that was driving.
Im lucky that i only have 2 mins of roadwork before i reach fields for hacking, but unfortunately 99% of the drivers that pass us in those 2 mins are completely ignorant of how to drive with horses.

all my thoughts with everyone involved, when i was a kid my shetland and my sisters welsh were killed on M1 and untill a couple of years ago police still showing photos, we now have to cross a high railway bridge with low sides and they are now looking into more and faster trains why is finding somewhere safe to ride so difficult.
