I've just heard some scary news.
We are at livery really close to a large riding school and I've just heard that one of the horses from there was hit by a lorry last night.

I think some folk from the riding school were out hacking, the horse chucked the rider off and bolted onto the bypass.

Scary - can't stop thiking about it, is so close to home.
We definitely had our wits about us more than usual when we hacked out last night, makes you think.

V sad.....

I haven't heard for defo but I think the rider not hurt.....

Oh my god that's horrible :(
What riding school is it? I'm in Irvine so not too far away either.
How was the person driving that hit the horse, do you know?
Scary stuff, my old mare always used to bolt after she got me off out hacking ...

Ayr Eq.

I think it was one of those big logging lorries from the harbour. I haven't heard that any people have been hurt so driver must have been ok.....

Thank God no people were hurt but poor horse :(
That's weird I was just on their site yesterday and sent the link to a girl at my yard because I wanted us all to go on their beach hack.

You have to cross the A77 to get to the beach from there. The bit they cross at is not the dual carriageway part but still mega busy - this is exactly where the accident happened. Not worth the risk IMO.....

Oh no - I used to ride there - some of the roads you had to hack on to get to the beach were very scary!

Exactly. I just couldn't risk it. I've hacked Rosie down there to have a peek at the bit you need to cross and it was really scary. She didn't bat an eyelid as per usual but I decided I'd rather pay to get a lift than hack her across there.

The poor people that witnessed it must be in a right state too. How awful :-(

Oh really! I didn't know that, I have never been to the yard before never mind hacked out in that area, had no idea, you think they would mention that on the bit about the beach rides!

I passed the accident just after if happened, they had been very quick to cover the horse up, but it was still obvious what it was...horrid to say the least!!!

The logging lorry was pulled up on main road, I'm sure it was a terrible experience for him and all concerned!!!

I was heading up to see my own horses when I saw it too, and the really sad thing is, I knew the pony in question :(

My mum and I stayed and helped to clear up the mess. It was really horrible, especially when the little mare closely resembled one of my own... we were left with the duty of untacking her as the man who came to take her away wouldn't take her with it on, and unfortunately that was when we saw the full extent of the impact

And there was almost another accident as the pony's owner's mother had driven down the road opposite shortly afterwards, saw the body, freaked out and almost drove her car into the oncoming traffic

If that's not bad enough I had spotted some Ghoul with a camera on the other side of the road taking pictures of the scene!

I swear I'll never get last night out of my head...

I was really really shocked when I heard this news tonight :(
Knew the pony quite well she was such a sweet mare...such a tragic thing to happen to her.
Used to hack down to the beach frequently with my pony and it gives me shivers to think of what has happened and has defo made me more aware.
RIP, she really was lovely x

Oh god, the girl that was involved was a friend who used to livery at my stables which is just down the road from Ayr Equestrian.
Her name is Marisa and the poor pony that died was her first ever horse, Holly, who was nearing about 15 or 16. Marisa got a new horse, Penny, about two years ago but couldn't let go of Holly and intended on keeping her until her time came naturally.
Marisa was on Penny and her friend was on Holly and they hacking down at Rozelle (a country estate). Not sure exactly what happened but the friend fell off and it scared Holly and she galloped off back to the stables. Marisa galloped after Holly in an attempt to even get in front and turn her away from the road but she followed her for at least half a mile until Penny tripped and Marisa fell off.
Not long after her dad arrived.
Turns out Holly had galloped right out onto the bypass into the lane of an oncoming lorry. I just hope she didn't suffer for too long.

Still can't believe the news. Holly was a gorgeous little grey mare and had been at my stables since I'd started riding, which was almost ten years ago now.
Opened my eyes right up to what can happen when you're out hacking on the road.

R.I.P Holly, such an angel!

Poor pony and poor owners. BUT it has happened before there and it will happen again. Stupid stupid practise riding across that road. They take beginner kids and adults across there on leadropes. They just trot out into the road with their hand held up to stop the traffic. I suppose at least the traffic will only be doing 60mph with the addition of the average speed cameras.
