my OH was travelling home last night, when he cam across a police blockade, he slowed down to pass and saw a horse lying on the road, the horse wasnt moving and he said it looks like it had been hit by a car, started to panic thinking it was one of mine but fortunately it wasnt, my heart goes out to whoever this horse was, my OH said it was beautiful and thats a compliment coming from him, so half five this morning ive been up checking my fences all the nags are still their quite amused to see me so early, im sorry its a bit of a pointless post but i just cant stop thinking about the poor owner having to deal with this, what a nightmare for them to wake upto

This is my worst nightmare. The fencing out our yard is shocking. (sheep fencing most of it). We had a close shave recently. I happened to be heading to our yard early one morning as we were going to a show. As i approached the yard, I could see one of the horses was out and heading towards the road. I managed to dump my car and race for a headcollar. A motorist was coming the other way and spotted the loose horse and me giving chase. Luckily I managed to grab the horse before he reached the road. I waved to thank the drive. Thankgod i was early that morning otherwise im not sure what would of happened.

Years ago someone left a gate open and 5 horses got out, mine thankfully made it home along a busy A road, but my friend lost her beautiful mare and foal, both hit by a van. The field was a long way from the road and they had gone through at least 3 other fields, but for some reason they still made their way to the main road. As I say, it was a long time ago but I remember it as if it was yesterday.

My friends pony some how got out one year and our yard isnt to far away from a dual carrage way and her pony ran across a round about and was hit by a van and had to shot at the scene. I do not know what I would do if this happened to me I couldnt begin to think what it would be like,

Always remember when I was at secondary school a friends beautiful and very talented palomino pony jumped the fence onto the road and was hit and killed. She was walking home from school and came across it all.

We had five escape one night from a yard I kept my horses at. Luckily mine were in but I got a phone call from YO at 11 asking me to go and bring some back in the box. They'd gone about 5 miles to a nearby village and were then in the working mens club car park. The gate had been opened we think by a horse who pawed at it a lot. The main gate onto thye road was also open!

We have had 2 incidents of gates being opened (deliberately/ maliciously?).

First one the 2 ponies got out but luckily it was only a minor road and someone found them quickly before the worst happened. Second one the ponies did not leave their field but I found the gate wide open. They could have reached a main road had they wandered. Neither field had any right of way through it and the gates could not be easily opened by a horse.

We now chain all the gates and have not had any problems since. It does not bear thinking about to have a horse killed in this way, and absolutely awful for the poor driver involved.

Edited because it didn't read very well and my opinion could have been misinterpreted!

Sorry, but why on earth would you keep your horses there when you know full well how poor and dangerous the fencing is....?

Me and my (then) horse were hit by a car whilst we riding... He had to be shot at the scene. My heart goes out to whoever's horse that is. Its a horrible thing to have to go through and I have first hand experiance of it!

My sister was telling me just yesterday how she and her husband were driving down the road from their house. There were two young girls on horses a little way in front. Suddenly a horse jumped over the hedge and started lunging at the ridden horses, and the girls started having trouble with their horses. My sister stopped the girl and got out to help, while her husband tried to slow down the traffic. She was appalled at how every single driver just sped past oblivious.

out hacking yesterday i saw a loose pony in a wheatfield, it didn't even have a headcollar on. i had to loop round the road to get to the yard it had come from (which was shut and padlocked), get a neighbour to give me a halter, ride back round to the field, and then it went away from me towards neighbour, fortunately he managed to corral it and get a headcollar on it, and stick it in a spare stable.
1 strand of elec fence, broken, and a single strand of plain wire at about 5' high (which it had ducked under i think). unbelievable.
very lucky no cars came along fast at that moment. rather daft to padlock yard up so no way of returning horse into stables!
one of my youngsters once jumped a 5' post and rail and hedge on to the road, leaving 3 other horses in the field with him, the idiot. there were huge skid marks so i think he'd tried to stop and then realised he couldn't so jumped the hedge. very lucky that no cars or buses were coming at that moment, and that i was there to grab him asap.
sometimes it is down to pure luck, no matter how careful you are.

I have had a few close shaves on the road....not so much now (touch wood) but more when I was a riding school rat - I have been lucky and so have a few of my friends. We once had a pony that wouldn't be caught jump out the field (13.2 over two five bar gates

) and gallop off down a very busy part of town on Bank Holiday weekend (main road going out) and had cars full of horrible men firing water pistols at her

Cars all slowed down, a coach driver even turned across the road so she would go up a side road (she didn't) and she very nearly made it to the yard unscathed, but when she cut across the road to get to the yard a car hit her and her chest pretty much ripped open

She survived, but even to this day I remember how much of a wreck I was.

An accident on the road is my worst nightmare - it makes me cry even thinking about it. So so sad

I meant to say "my sister stopped the car" but the website went down and I am now too late to amend my post
