My horse ( exracehorse) has had a month off work due to an foot absess, he's been lunged etc yesterday was first time back on him in 2 months took him for a 20 min hack on the road no trotting came today and he's lame, any reason why this would be .. lady on the yard very kindly said this could be cos I'm too heavy for him I'm 9st 9 if this is case and people on here think the same i would change for him obviously ..
Any ideas welcome

Thank you for your reply, the foot that had the absess is cold it's his other leg that's warmer however he is lame on the cold leg.
That suggests to me that the abscess isn’t completely away then 🥺 you might need to poultice again or get the farrier to have a look just in case there is a foreign body in there

Probably a bit of abcess that never drained ans now he has been exposed to hard ground (I am assuming you did a bit of road work) it's shown its fave again. Is his hoof warn? Does he have a throbbing digital pulse?
It's the same leg he Is lame on however it Is cold and no pulse his other front leg is the warmest limb

What she may have meant, but hasn’t said well, is that the horse might not be strong enough to carry you properly. Which isn’t the same thing as you being “too heavy” at all. You’re a perfectly normal weight for the general horse to carry.

You’re about my weight when I’m at my slimmest, and I like small, light Araby and thoroughbredy types. I’ve never had a problem with them carrying me, if they are well muscled and relatively fit.

With your horse having some time off, he may have lost some condition and that could be what she’s trying, clumsily, to refer to.

If he’s still lame, then I’d get the farrier back to look at the abscess because pockets of gas and pus can be retained in the healing process. I’d get the vet out if it’s not that.

If he returns to looking sound once you’re off him, or shortly after being ridden, and is cleared by the vet then I’d suggest doing a lot of ground work to build him up again. I really like raised poles for exercises, especially for working over their back and core muscles so that they can support us more easily when we are in the saddle.

Could be anything tbh, see if he is better tomorrow or call the vet.

Could be the abscess isn't resolved.
Could be muscle soreness from being ridden after a month off.
Could he he has struck into himself either on the hack or at home.
... Or a million other things unfortunately.

How long did you poultice for, sounds like it hasn't all gone, can't possibly see how you would be to heavy for an ex racer, unless they were miniature Pony racers 😁
He was poulticed for nearly 4 weeks and then he was sound shoe back on etc and started back into very light exercise he has been absolutely fine have usual fresh moments .. took him for a 20 min hack up the road and back and this morning he's lame

One at our yard has had 3 consecutive abcess problems on 3 different feet, we have had such a lot of rain, but we are lucky to be on higher ground, and drain pretty good, but our fields are quite wet, my first call would be my farrier.

Could be a compensatory abscess if its the other hoof.

Because he will have been resting the abscess hoof, the other one will have under more strain than usual and it can lead to an abscess in the other hoof.

As others have said, could be muscle loss from having to hold himself differently with the other abscess. I'd expect this to be weakness on the leg which had the abscess.
