Horse leaning in horse walker

One of our horses is becoming progressively more of a nuisance in the horsewalker. He's learned how to slow it down or stop it by leaning. The manufacturers stopped using a shocking system when a customer had an electric shock which caused a serious heart attack.

I have heard of people using electric fencing to keep horses moving but it's proving difficult to work out how it can be done as the machine is constantly turning

All ideas welcome particularly if you've successfully wired up your own horsewalker

Cant help you hun Im afraid but just wanted to welcome you to the forum! Have you thought about locking Gordon in there with the horses and a cattle prod ?

Hi there. We had much the same problem with our old walker that had no electric on the arms. We wired it up very successfully with electric fencing tape and a battery energiser and it worked really well. We screwed insulators onto the walker frame using a drill and self tapping screws and then threaded electric tape along. We placed the energiser onto the tape on the inside of the walker.The power clip goes straight onto the tape. For the earth connection we attached a long piece of chain to the walker frame so that the end trailed on the ground, thus earthing it and at the same time going around with the walker. The earth clip on the energiser then clips to the chain. Sorry it is a bit difficult to explain but if it is not clear please come back to me. We used this for years with a succession of horses. Now have a smart new walker with all singing and dancing attachments!!
 
Welcome to the forum. Electrified pushers are the best idea - can be a bit dodgy to tie the horses on, although I do this with one horse in particular, who likes to grab the rubber on the pusher in his teeth, lift it up and then half-rear and land on it with his forelegs - all while walking round - quite interesting to watch, and he thinks it's great fun. We used to cable tie the head of a stiff yard brush onto the pusher for one horse - that worked well for a while. Good luck!
 
have to say, never had any trouble tieing horses on and ive tied some little swines up. young horses in cluded, if tied to baler twine and in a head collar that fits i see it as perfectly save.

I actually thought it was quite funny when we first used it on the Luso stallion, he had SUCH a shock (no pun intended)!

No idea how you manage to sort the horse out without electric partitions though!
 
Thanks Sport Horse. Just the kind of info we need. I'm fed up with standing with a whip and grumpy hubby shouting at him and me if I turn my back.

Don't fancy the thought of tying him up unless it's deperation point. This horse tries to evade everything, never learns that we always win in the end. I'm sure he thinks he's put here to keep us on our toes.

Did you put your energiser on the ground or on a small platform on top of the centre?
 
Probably should introduce myself as H G quickly identified me . I'm the Mum of a Para rider who's quest for perfection and determination exhaust me at times. Fixing the horse walker is priority for her and peace and quiet for me!!!

We have 3 lovely horses it's just that one has read every book going and keeps telling us how to do things. It's the correct way or else. The annoying thing is he's not naughty or dangerous, just thinks he has every excuse to behave like a toddler throwing tantrums.
 
Battery energiser is designed to hang onto electric tape. Coming from the energiser are two wires with large bulldog type clips. The red wire (positive) clips to the electric tape. The green one (earth) clips to the chain trailing onto ground providing earth. I have had two different makes of energiser and both work the exactly the same. All the parts were obtained from my local fencing supplier who explained how to use it. The chain idea for earth came from another luckless soul with horses stopping their walker! As for tying your horse, I can only say that all mine that stopped it when loose soon learned that they could stop it when tied in exactly the same way ie planting their feet and ceasing movement!!
 
Yup - i second putting electric wire round it attached to an battery energiser - it hangs off the wire and you can switch it on and off as needed.

My mare used to sit on the walker - a zap or too up the bum works a treat.
 
Thanks folks. We've been trying to find out how it's done for ages. It proves you just need to talk to those who've done it.Our energiser doesn't hang from the fence but it should be quite simple to strap it on top of the centre so that it turns without tangling.
