A horse on my yard is leaving temporarily - going on a short term loan for the summer. I had the owner of the riding stables call last night to make sure it was okay for them to come early to collect horse. Now I have a funny feeling the owner isn't going to bother coming up to see the horse off. I am a wee bit irked that I am expected to get the horse out of the field and make it look presentable for their arrival and most likely will be expected to load the darned "bad loader".

My plan is to go out there when they arrive in my trusty flip-flops. Do you think I am bad?

No. You run a boarding stables, but you're not their slave!
Horse goes off as it is found....if the owner had a shred of decency he/she/it would make the horse presentable his/her/it's self

No it's there horse and unless they are paying you to go get it and risk yourself loading it then I wouldn't touch it. If they haven't turned up when it is due to be collected and the new people turn up, maybe mention to them to call the owners the oh they must be on their way, why not call them to see how long they will be? tack usually works. Oh and definitely go with the flip flops

Yes sometimes I really think this sort of thing is not on. I get paid nothing extra for all this. I am always happy to "help out" but it does get a bit ridic when you are "expected" to do things like this. Mind you it isn't the loaners fault and then it looks bad on my place

nope - if the yard want it - let them get on with it - and the owner as well

OR - go out there dressed to load and bill the owner x dollars per hour for your time

I would leave the horse out and when loaners arrive i would play dumb ( i do that quite well

) and say " oh sorry i didnt know what time you were coming the owners told me they would be here" Then i would let them call the owners to get their arse at your farm!! After all they could be anybody and you couldnt let someone elses horse just go with ANYBODY could you

I am a full livery at a yard where we get a really good service, however, I would never expect someone to be there and load my horse up for me.....that is outside of the bounds of YO's responsibility I believe. But then I am a lot more hands on than other people I know on full livery.
If that's what they want I can't understand why they don't just ask you straight? Then you can discuss the terms of the arrangement! I hate it when people play silly games.

its their horse and i know you are worrid bout how it will look on your farm but its not your responsibility i think you should go out in your dressing gown and slippers and say you have come down with something and you are not feeling to good so you are very sorry but wont be able to help them

Well went out in my trusty old flip-flops and just before people turned up, so did the owner, so I'll let her off. Anyway horse was his usual arsey-self to load; after about half an hour I ended up getting my wonderful little Jet who just popped on and after about 15 mins so did the other horse. Then took Jet off and away went other horsey.

All worked out well in the end.
