Horse Lice

Hello!

Annoyingly, my horse Serenity has somehow acquired lice.
I haven't ever had to deal with them before and I don't really know what to do for the best. There are 3 others in my field with 3 different owners. One is a novice and two never see their owners and are pretty much unhandled.

Does anyone have any tips for how to deal with this?

For your horse, a shampoo (from the tack shop) with an appropriate product and liberal application of louse powder will get rid of it on the horse, but I would wash rugs and numnahs.

The other horses will also need treating.

I would not try to apportion blame. I have never had a horse with lice but my first pony had them in the 80s. No other horse was reported to have them in the field, and once treated, as above, they never returned. No one else treated theirs either, so what do I know???

I also had a Shitland with them. I'd had him months with no sign and he never left the premises! I can only guess they were hidden in his mane for a long time. I just treated with powder as he was out in winter un-rugged and washing didn't seem fair. He was turned out with my big 7/8 TB horse, who also never got them. I powdered his mane and tail as a precaution but I really don't think he had any.

Thank you! I've ordered some powder, I'm a bit worried about bathing her as we don't have warm water at the yard and she is living out. I don't know if I'll be able to convince the other owners to do their horses, one hasn't been up in over 8 months and I've never seen the other one. Those two are very hairy cobs, and they're very itchy, so I'd be surprised if they didn't have them

I wipe them over with a cloth and repeat when you think a batch of eggs have hatched out.
Its not for animal treatment, but I use Indorex spray of rugs, because it stops the eggs from hatching.
