Horse living out ...

My pony lives out - currently in a field with no shelter as his usual field is just knee deep with mud so it's being rested. He's well rugged and seems fine and has ad lib Round bales of hay. Field is lovely and dry with quite a bit of grass too.

He's likely to be in that field for another month or so - and since it's predicted dry but very cold weather fir the next week I was wondering about creating a wind break using pallets and fence posts to give them a bit of shelter from the wind ... And perhaps putting a bale of straw as somewhere they can lie down infront of it?

Is that worth doing??

As long as rugged and has food i dont think you should have a bother.

I have one field that only has a row of stunted trees so not much shelter but they have grass, hay, feed and are rugged so happier than they would be knee deep in mud in a better sheltered field

dry field, GRASS!!!(whats that) and hay and a rug? he will be absolutely fine. its a lot more than most have in Feb! esp the grass bit (even if of low nutritional value it is belly fill and amusement!)

Ah, don't worry, if he's rugged and with forage, I'm sure he'll be fine

My well bred WB is out, and I took her rug off a week ago as she was too full of energy (and is on no hard feed!

). Unless you have a reason to suspect that your horse is cold, I'm sure he won't be bothered. Mine tend to sleep on the most open side of their field, even when they could stand by the hedge

Our two are out in dry field with grass a rug and no field shelter and are very happy boys, dony worry he will be fine.

My ponies are out, only hedges/trees for shelter in a wet field, some grass, no hay and no rugs!!!
He wont melt!

If its dry, the cold shouldn't bother him at all. My 3 live out 24/7 in blizzards no problem and even though they have access to 2 big shelters / stables they rarely stand in them!
