I have it on good authority that the horse didn't escape, but got stuck in the crate. Sadly I've read that he was subsequently put down, how sad.

The crates they travel in are very solid and I think most airlines use this type of crate now. You cannot jump out of them.
According to reports, horse slipped and went down during turbulence, got stuck and couldnt get back up.

I was surprised - and depressed - to see horses going to slaughter in a plane (Canada I think). Very basic crates.

ps. i won’t Google it to confirm because I don’t want to see lots of awful related / unrelated images

Yes there is a big campaign to try and stop this practice, they fly them from Canada to Japan, sometimes through Korean airlines.

As they’ve rightfully pointed out, horse slaughter is permitted in Canada so there is no reason why they need to be exported live in this day and age.
