I was just wondering if anyone knew any info about a horse lorry fire yesterday on the M6 round Stoke area. I was held up on the otherside of the road for about 40 mins and when we eventually passed the lorry was completely burnt out. The back looked like it had been taken down (what was left of it) but I was just wondering if anyone knew if everyone people and horses were ok. there was no sign of anyone anywhere and Ive been looking on the news today but seen nothing

I was told about this today but like you can't find anything in the news. Lots of people were stood on the bank apparently but no sign of any horses.

Lets hope that the lorry was empty or that they were transported elsewhere to safety. Can't imagine the police wanting them to hang about on the motorway.

I was involved in a motorway box fire many moons ago. The police closed Mway and called for another lorry to pick up horses and take them home so hopefully this was the case yesterday.

I was chatting this afternoon, whilst hacking, to the lady who owns the farm where the incident unfolded.

Horses were on their way to a show at Uttoxeter. They were unloaded and the farmer (hubby of who I was chatting to) smashed his fencing along the motorway to allow the horses into his field to safety. Super smart pair of horses they were too.

The women managed to get the saddles off the lorry too. No one was hurt and the horses were later picked up and on their way.

Very lucky escape. I must say, it was most bizarre to see people wandering about on the carriageway. People were even walking their dogs in the outside lane. You wouldn't have seen the horses as the land there falls away from the south bound carriageway. They were led to safety at the farm with the huge blue slurry storage tank (mini gasometer looking thing) which was right where the lorry came to a halt.

Their worker saw the lorry driving along the motorway with flames coming from it. People were tooting like mad to attract their attention.

I've not seen it on the news either and can't find it when on the thisisstaffordshire (sentinel) website. Although to be fair, the website isn't the best for searching.

I didn't know what vehicle fire was until today. When the motorway was stationary Duncan (my hubby) had checked a traffic news site that just labelled the hold up as a "vehicle fire".

It was only when chatting to the neighbouring farmer today that I realised how close it was to us and that it was actually a horse box involved. The incident was literally just south of Junction 16 on the southbound carriageway.

Hi, It was my Horsebox that was on fire on the M6 on Sunday, I had two horses on board, that were fine, we off loaded and took them down the hardshoulder into a field. The farmer was very helpfull, and the horses were well behaved!! There were three of us in the vehicle, which made it easier to get the horses off the wagon on the motorway.

Two Lorry drivers stopped also, who were very helpfull, one of them tried to put the fire out with an extinguisher, but the extinguisher ran out. The fire didnt start until a couple of minutes after we pulled over. Something seemed to blow in the engine, thats why we pulled over, and a few minutes after looking under the wagon, we noticed small flames appearing.

Can advise everybody to get their wagons checked reguarly, as mine was very well maintained, and was a W Reg Iveco, So it wasnt as old as some of them out on the road.

Apparently we were in the worst place for the fire brigade to get to us, miles away from any fire stations, hence the wagon was well ablaze before the Fire Brigade got to us.

I feel for all the horse owners who had to drive past the wagon on sunday, It definately was a sight that we all dont want to see.

Both my horses are fine, and were off the wagon at the first sight off the fire.

Hope this answers all questions

I am so pleased to hear everything was ok (well apart from the lorry) It was an awful sight to see and I was just hoping everyone involved was ok.

That's really good to hear. Pleased everyone was ok.

I was informed by the farmer's wife that your horses were super smart types and were admired. (The farmer - let you put the horses in his field - his wife used to break and train horses).

Everyone's worst nightmare isn't it? I see Chinese whispers have set in though, as I was told your lorry was driving along on fire and people were tooting at you to attract your attention.

Yes, my worst nightmare was to have to unload on the motorway, but as the traffic steadied up, the horses werent all that bothered, although they had to do the derby bank to get down off the hard shoulder!!

The farmer was a funny guy, said the horses were starved and eating too much of his grass . . . Typical farmer!!
The wifeswap storey came out aswell whilst we were there, a little entertainment for us.

Yes, the chinese whispers must of started, but hopefully the horrific experience is alot clearer now I have told it as it was.

Thanx for your concern, and I hope I never have to witness anything like that again
