could you please help. We have one of our horse losing weight it is now starting to resemble an RSPCA case. Now we are feeding it and giving it hay any suggestions on how to beef it up?

Also we have a horse with mange, I have been out of the loop for a while i take it we just get a powder to clear it up or has the treatment changed?

For the horse that is loosing condition...

Get its teeth floated by a EDT or vet, usualy costs 20-30 pounds.

Give it a good worming.

Feed plenty of hay (keeps them warm as it digests) and get some build up mix or high oil feed.

You might concider rugging it... the less heat it looses, the less condition it looses.

If the loss in condition has been sudden, I would have the vet out to do a full spectrum blood test as the loss might be a symptom of an underlying condition. It is best to find out before it develops in to something serious.

As for the one with mange... if it is mange you need the Vet as some types of mange are notifyable. However, it is more likely to be lice or rainscold as it is that time of year, both esily dealt with. The vet will easily identify the problem

You definitly need to get the vet to come and look at the horse with hair loss asap. It is more likely to be sort of lice/ringworm but only a vet can give you a diagnoses and a treatment.

I would also suggest the vet look over the one with the hairloss and you get some professional advice is you haven't had horses long. There could be many physical reasons for the weight loss, but also someone needs to analyse what sort of feeding your horse needs to supplement your grazing. After speaking to a vet, call some feedlines. They are very helpful.
