Hi all

My cob lives out and has a rug and neck cover on (no filling). Her mane is quite long and thick. This is the first winter she has had a long mane as I usually hog her! I have noticed that a section of er man usually gets tangled, then when you brush it it falls out. Now where its fallen out, she isnt bald, there are small bits of hair there. She is not itchy there, there is no scabs. It is just one section but seems to be getting a little wider. I think it is her rug rubbing but I am just asking incase it is something else? I have looked and I can't see anything there. My other horse has shorter hair in the same kind of section on his mane.

I'd be 99.9% certain it's the rug, combo rugs or ones with neck covers rub manes in general, unless you have a horse with a really dense/thick/hardy mane!! My mare loses her's annually and I spend all summer trying to get a decent one back, so this winter she's gone back to a standard neck rug.

Heat and/or neck rug rubbing ...
I keep mr horses's manes plaited through the winter and this helps, but most importantly I use only very specific, nylon lined neck covers (Premier Equine and the new Shires models or most ideally, Rambo wugs). Also use Snuggy Hoods when it's very muddy as any wet can make them itchy and then the manes out more easily.

hmmmm.... perhaps some horse thieves have been in the night & removed some mane. You know, to mark your horse as one for stealing at a later date. :D

(my money's on rugs)

Thanks all, thats exactly what I thought but thought I would check. Thank you.

Dont joke! 2 yearlings about 3 miles away were stolen last night!!
