Hi All,

Today I finally thought I might be able to hack my horse at the weekend due to snow melting so I turn him out and he threw a shoe!!!
My farrier is coming next Tuesday and doesn't work between christmas and new year so I'm a bit stuffed for hacking this coming bank holiday weekend :(
I have 100% ruled out hacking no way would I do it anyway but would it be ok to lunge in the school with 1 shoe? my horse has very good feet anyway and only has fronts on for road riding, he also doesn't get sore like most horses.

What do you think???

I'm sure he would be fine, think it would depend for me. Do you need to get him working asap for something e.g. hunting or a comp? If so then I'd probably do it but if not then don't really see the point.

My horse lost his shoe, last week. Took the farrier 5 minutes to put a new shoe on ..... Wont they come out just to quickly put one on? Then you can carry on your schooling / hacking.

How about taking the other one off if you are able? Then both feet the same. Would very much depend on your capabilities in shoe removal and your horses ability to cope without. If he copes without why not leave them off then he can't loose another?! (no no no I'm not a hoof hugging barefoot fanatic!! Just sounds like your horse might be ok without shoes at all!)

Is it a front or back shoe? If it is back then I think it would absolutley be ok but if front if your surface is good and your horse is coping then go for it, it shouldn't be a problem. Am suprised your farrier wont come out at all over the next two weeks as it really is a five minute job.

Hi All,

Thanks for all your advise, i'll probably just leave him for this weekend! I decided my new years resolution was to get my horse fit again and possibly jump in the outdoor shows so was all set to start this weekend but another week won't hurt I guess..

He only has fronts on so he has lost one of the fronts, i'm not very confident at removing the other myself so I think it'll just be better all round if I leave it alone. Or just pray he loses the other in the field as well?? :) He does ok barefoot and only has fronts on for road work

My farrier is on holiday visiting family and I have an appointment Tuesday anyway as he is due a new set so I don't really see the point in getting another farrier just to knock the other one on for it to be taken off a few days later..

Thank you all again!!

Would you just pop back to your office to do five minutes of work when you were on holiday? Of course not. So why should farriers have too?

You have no idea where this client might be on her farriers rounds. She may be 30min away so your 'five' minutes is actually over an hour.

Her farrier may have gone away, and even if he hasnt must he work during his holidays? She is aware he is on holiday so he has obviously let her know, what more must he do?

The OP has said since her horse is booked in she will just wait and thats fair enough, I know that if i go away for more than a couple days (because most horses CAN wait a couple days) i arrange with another farrier to attend to any emergencies for me.

I wasnt working on Monday but i went out for a client whose horse had lost a shoe because i know how lame the horse goes without his shoes on.

edited to add OP if you wanted to work him on a soft school surface the lack of shoe shouldnt make a difference and that call is up too you. You know your horse.

Oh don't be silly J, you know perfectly well that farriers and YOs are not entitled to any time off - something to do with "lifestyle choice" according to many on HHO lol :rolleyes::rolleyes:

At least the OP is prepared to wait until Tuesday

You really don't need shoes for road work, why not take the opportunity and, go bare foot, properly.

Hi All,
Thanks for the extra advise, I have decided that it won't do any harm to wait at all. I don't think it would be too much of a problem if I did lunge but the what ifs just aren't worth it!! Its not like a weekend is going to back a big difference to his fitness.

Also in response to AndySpooner:

Once upon a time he did go bare foot but on the roads he got very tender toed which was why he got front shoes put back on.
