Hello..
I bought a lovely 9yr old cob last April, lovely temperment, fantastic and safe out hacking, needs some schooling, but doable.. My first horse in my semi vintage life, at last.! So far so good...
Long story short, he was demonstrating some stallion-ey behavior, liked the mares, a bit snippy w other horses, very distracted.. After a particular nasty attack.. got him tested and.. He was a rig.. Got him sorted, surgery all went well.. 3 weeks bx rest, 5 weeks padock rest, now a New Man.. Absolute gem..
What I'm worried about is his loss of condition. I know he may not have the bulk of a half stallion now, he was in a small asphalt paddock with no grass for weeks (did have hay then, and now on haylege and hay) and its now winter as well, . He's in good form, But he looks so scrawny now.. He had a lot of antibiotics post op, so just started Green Clay and Synbiovit to get his gut bacteria sorted.
What else can I do to help him.?
Thank you in advance.. ?

I expect the surgery will take a while to recover from physically as well as mentally so apart from getting his gut settled look at the possibility of ulcers as well as just the bacteria needing to re establish, otherwise it will be time, going out onto some grass, probably once the spring grass comes through as he will now be more elaxed you may soon be having the opposite problem of too much weight, I would gradually increase his general fitness which should improve his general muscle tone and give a good vit/ min supplement or balancer as well as a simple fibre base feed.

A friend had to geld her PRE (due to huge melanomas on the testicles) at age 15 and he definitely lost condition. Outwardly he didn't seem stressed, and she did take him back to the clinic for a check-up. He eventually got back his condition. Took a bit, but being a bit older it wasn't entirely unexpected. I think being back on the field with grass helped.

I cannot recall if she did anything for ulcers or probiotic stuff.

Thank you.. be positive, CanteringCarrot and Pinkvboots.. ?
Very reassuring and good advice.. Feeling much better about him now.. Time will tell. I'm trying to keep him going, but there's an 1hr15mins slot system @ livery yard to maintain social distancing/crowding etc, so not getting out and about much.. But could be worse.! Thanks again.. ? ❤️
