No more disgusting than cow meat or sheep meat or chicken meat ...

Whats wrong with horsemeat?
I imagine its lovely.

I dont get how its wrong to eat a horse but fine to eat a cow....
Not sure how anyone can find it disgusting!

My views are the same as for any slaughtered meat really, so long as it's done humanely, I don't have a problem with it although personally, I wouldn't eat horsemeat but I don't eat veal or rabbit either for the same reason. What do you think is in dog and cat food?

No not at all, a horse is livestock same as a cow....

Horse can be quite tasty actually if properly cooked. :)

i quite like horse meat... and intend to try that restaurant...
meat is meat is meat - eat one then eat them all IMHO

ETA - meat is meat is meat IF wefare is good/humany killed yada yada yada ;) hence why i try to raise and kill my own food

As long as it was ethically farmed i wouldnt have a problem with it. Battery chickens and indoor reared pork- now that is DISGUSTING! And yet people still buy it, loving a cheap chicken from Tescos for £2.50. The welfare of those animals is appalling

I have to more or less agree with this. And also the poster above who says aslong as its done humanely where is the issue?

Not to mention all the nightmare issues if horses where not able to be taken for slaughter to enter the human food chain.....You only have to look at America to see the problems there

Don't worry OP, I am a veggy, so i can say it is horrible as i don't agree with any meat eating. Yes, I am against it. However, like the poster above me said, what's more horrible (and the reason for me being a veggie for so long) is the housing arrangements. I don't agree with that ten times over than the actual eating of the meat!

Would never ever eat horse meat, though would never eat any meat!

Its a little known fact that 1/5th of the salami sold in this country contains horse meat, even though you wont see it on the label. WHW, when they were the ILPH, did a survey and found this out!

Get real- do you realise what a vital part slaughterhouses play in this country for the humane and correct disposal of horses who'd otherwise be destined for live export or a life of deprivation.

hear hear. it's the quality of the animals' lives, and the humane manner of their deaths, that's most important.

we should be encouraging people to eat horsemeat. shorter journeys for horses to go to abbatoirs, better value for horses going to slaughter, would hopefully lead to a slight shortage of horses, them all being worth more, and therefore higher welfare levels.

.

Nope. As long as it's been ethically farmed and slaughtered in the country of origin, then I see no problem at all.

yeah sorry i added the ETA in afterwards! :o i'm v pro humanely raised, travelled and slaughtered - so long as that happens i'll eat any meat. tbh most of the meat i eat we've raised or shot ourselves - if i buy supermarket meat i always loko at the country of origin/how it was raised etc etc

I can see alot of horses being stolen from fields now this has raised its ugly head.

Why?!
There are 2 slaughterhouses in this country which both slaughter a regular flow of privately owned horses, one certainly already sometimes needs to maintain a waiting list.
Theyre very, very rigorous about passport checking.

Good, wish more people were like that. But you can never be sure, apparently if the meat is packed in this country is can be labled as British. Doesn't matter if it came from Asia!!

No, I don't like it but again I too am veggie so don't eat any meat and therefore don't think it's ok to eat cows and sheep etc but not horse. Although I do feel it is rather strange to eat an animal that is regarded so highly by us in other ways - ie competitively, as pets, used in therapy (ie RDA), and that is proven to be very intelligent (not unlike your pet dog - and I wouldn't eat dog!). I bet if the chef put dog or cat on the menu there'd be more of a response and feelings of disgust shown.

I am not sure why some feel the need to eat it. Sheep, cows, pigs etc in the main are farmed to eat and that is about it. I too think the welfare issues should be considered more with the rearing of ALL animals and I personally think ALL meat should be more expensive so people actually appreciate it and it's not seen as being something you should or could eat every day. Many years back, eating meat was a luxury and most families would only eat it say once or twice a week as it was not cheap.

I think we should go back to that more really. Sadly I doubt that'll ever happen as we, as a race are greedy.

Why? I guess this resturant has raised quite a bit of publicity over the issue of eating horses, but i doubt the demand for horsemeat in the UK is so big that a huge blackmarket of horse thefts and eating will spring up overnight!

Just make sure you keep your horses skinnier than your neighbours! ;)

I'm also a veggie but I don't mind people eating meat as long as they choose wisely ie not battery/ indoor reared, has to be culled humanely etc. I'm not sure about eating horse as I always picture them as pets not livestock but as long as they are bred for meat and are not old riding, driving horses, ex brood mares or young stock who don't meet requirement etc. Also that they don't have to travel far to slaughter and are culled humanely I don't see a problem with other people eating it (still would probably not visit that restaurant though as to me they are pets).

Have you seen humans teeth? they are the teeth of an omnivore..
Do humans have eyes on the side of the head.. NO cause we are hunters.

Prey animals should be eaten.. Predators should not. AKA. dogs/cats/foxes/lions/tigres.. NO

horses, sheep, deer, goat, pig, cow. YAY!

Vegi or not.. humans are still designed to be omnivores.

To be fair, despite being a horse lover etc I can't see the difference between people eating horse meat and any other form of meat.

So long as every animal before it is killed, has been cared for and then killed correctly, then I don't have a problem with it.

Now if I was a veggie, then yes I would have a problem with it.

I do think I personally would be able to eat horse meat if I saw them being loaded up for killing, yes it would make me feel very sick, but then it would do with any animal.

But if it was put on a plate in front of me, I'd be temped to try it, just to see what it tastes like, but its not something I would go out and buy.
