Hi all,
I keep horses in livery in Kent and it appears that one of them has been mutilated for the second time, yesterday, in her genital area. This is the second time it has happen in a few weeks which convinces us to think that there is the possibility of a lunatic out to hurt horses again as they have done in the past. The wounds have been horific, at one point we thought the infection was so bad she might not make it. We're pretty sure she's not doing this to her self as she is incredibly calm, is wormed up to date and her tail is not damaged at all which it would be if she was rubbing against something violently.
I was just wondering if anyone in the Kent/Sussex/Surrey etc area has an inkling that they may have experienced a similar incident with any of their horses as we cannot do anything about it yet because we're not 100% certain! Please help my mare's life may depend on it!!

Firstly SO sorry to hear of this awful business - you must be worried to death about your horse.

I have no knowledge of this kind of stuff happening - where abouts are you based (be vague-ish if you prefer)?

I presume you've reported this to the police and/or animal welfare organisations to see if they can help / know of anything similar locally?

I do hope you get to the bottom of it - but in the meantime, how about finding some temporary lodgings for your horse or move permanently? I'd also visit other local horse owners / yards / vets to alert them and ask if they have any helpful info for you.

Best of luck x

I'd rather just say in the south kent area because i dont want my yard to get a bad reputation coz its AMAZING!
We haven't reported it to the police because we have no evidence although i hadnt thought of animal welfare organisations so I'll get on to them tomorrow to see what they think!
The moving horse thing is a great idea but they're so settled and happy I wouldn't want to cause them any more distress than they're already going through but i will bear it in mind.
Will keep you updated and am going to set up a facebook group soon.

I would urge you to talk to your local Police. There was a spate of this sort of thing in Hampshire a few years back and they took it very seriously.

Sometimes horses can just injure themselves and you cannot imagine how they have done it, but if you are in the slightest doubt report it.

I hope the mare recovers quickly.

Please report this as both of my horses are kept at a livery in south east kent and that has now put me on edge and worried!!!its sickening if someone is doing this!!!

Heard stories like this two years back, rumour was it was something to do with the summer solstice, its the mares blood from genital area thats needed so it can be rubbed on to help with getting pregnant, as said rumour.

That's awful, I am so sorry. I agree with others above, please report. Police may know of others in the area and your evidence could be vital. Good luck and I hope she makes a full recovery. Hugs.

Report it to the police urgently. They will take it seriously. There was a spate of these attacks in my area years ago and a much loved riding school mare died as a result. Please don't take the chance.

Get the police involved and get your mare stabled in a secure yard over night.

Thank you so much everyone for your kind words. My yard is now taking action on my behalf as they deal with my horses more often than I do, and know a hell a lot more than I do, so it makes sense for them to handle it.
The vet has confirmed the possibility of an attack and is willing to submit this in writing.
My mare has recovered well in the last 24 hours and we're very positive that she'll pull through!!!!!!!! :)
Will keep everyone posted on any updates or further attacks I hear of
love x
