horse names getting more odd ?

Old Baggage

I read this as Old Bandage to start off with! Now that would be a strange name for a horse!
I once knew a horse called Playboy. It was changed as soon as he was sold to somebody else who had some sense. I have also heard of an event horse called 'Ugly'.
I have Griz (short for Griselda which some numpty named her), Sprite, Spud and Woggy. The latter was brought as an yearling with no stable name. His competition name is Stormhill Indian but I didn't fancy 'Storm' or 'Indie' as I already knew far too many horses with those names and wanted something unique. He was called baby for two weeks and we kept saying 'What a good boy' to him which somehow got shortened to Woggy and it stuck. Pretty unique I think but I spend my life explaining his name to people!

I know a pony called Margaret, both stable name and on her passport.....

Not a particularly weird name granted. I just can't imagine looking at a newborn filly and thinking "yep she's definitely a Margaret" :D

Knew a chestnut mare called 'Havoc'. .....I'm not a believer of the stereotypes, but maybe she was well named ?!? I quite liked it actually.

Is it not true also re children's names also becoming stranger, spelt differently etc... Or am I just getting older!

I regularly schooled an ex-racer for somebody one summer, he was called Damien and branded 666, no lie, he was a s*** when he wanted to be.

One of mine is called Daemon. Because he's demonic. But also very, very awesome ;)

I've seen one recently called Vomit on fb. Mine's called Jack so naturally husband renamed him Plodder and it bloomin stuck!!!

One of my first SJ's a 12hh Wizz of a little pony was called Beep Beep... I had to be caught exiting the SJ arena other wise it was laps of the horse boxes!

I have a lovely big grey TB called Gray ... He is called Gray Mountain (after LOTR) and no matter how many times I write down GrAy Mountain with the A underscored most show secretaries still spell it wrong and put in an E. I wouldn't mind so much but he is American hence being an A. It's stupid how much it annoys me but it really does!

My pony was called Thumper, I assume it was because of the way she stomped the ground on the spot before a jump because she got so excited. I loved that name though. We have an Ella who is filthy in the stable which has turned her into Smell. Recently moved onto a new yard and got some funny looks when my dad & I kept calling her Smell, until we explained!

You've brought back childhood memory of a riding school horse called 'Comet the Vomit' ! I think it was just because it rhymed - poor Comet!

There's a horse at our yard named Handsome, which is vomit-inducing enough, but it's also an ill-tempered, spoilt homebred. His stable name is 'Horrible'!

My youngster's stable name is Chewie as she was born on May 4th. We had a Foal Sweepstake to guess the date of birth and sex, my husband is quite the Star Wars fan so said the foal was going to be born on May 4th, would bay, a filly and will be called Chewbacca! He won the sweepstake! Chewie stuck before I could come up with anything else! All the winnings went to the National Foaling bank :-) Her show name is Enigmatic Update. Her name had to begin with E for registering with KWPN, her sire is Update and she has a white marking on her forehead which looks like a question mark so Enigmatic Update it was. Again my husbands suggestion!

I know a racehorse called Pony. My loan mare was called Shiney but for some reason she was nicknamed Shoe.
I used to ride a horse called Fugly. A friend of mine had 2 sec A youngsters called Salt and Pepper :) And a lady I used to yard with had a big, chestnut mare called Fanny, aka. Big ginger fanny :D

Not really the same, but my mare's name is often misheard or spelled, her stable name is Sunny, I often get people then calling her 'Sheeny', 'Sally' and even 'Sunkey?!' - I mean what kind of name is that?! :O Her registered name is Howen Sunset, when looking at the results of a competition, it has often been spelled "Howeel Sunsey", "Hello Sunset", "Howan Sunjet".

How difficult is Howen Sunset to spell?! :(

Ours have some funny nicknames, there's Nasheeta, aka "Muckface", she's very messy in her stable, and is always dirty, she's also known as "Hippohead" (typical grey who loves mud), or "Crumpet" - not quite sure how she got that name, but has sweet itch and often has rough crumbly skin.

I know a horse who's from France, he had a long French name, they have changed it to Frenchie now.

Are names getting more odd?

No, I don't think so, sometimes I wish people would be a little more inventive with names. There are certain common (as in the number of flies on a muck heap ) names that just make me grind my teeth when I hear them.

If we were to make a list of names I can guarantee that my two most loathed names would be in the top ten. I won't mention them because I would undoubtedly cause offence.

The best horse I ever had was called Useless, he wasn't.

Many many years ago whilst a college we had some great names: donella, flump, columbus, midget, allegra and sausage to name a few!

My mare was Alice when she was little but previous owners changed it to daisy
