Horse needing a wee when ridden

Over the last few weeks my horse has started to be a little bit stuffy when schooling, he has had his back checked, the saddler out and teeth checked. He just seems uncomfortable. The only thing I can seem to put it down to is that when he is a bit stuffy he seems to go for a wee almost immediately after I get off. Problem is I obviously can't force him to go for a wee before I ride and he doesn't go when I'm on him so not really sure if this problem can be fixed or just one of those things?

My pony is the complete opposite! Picks the most inappropriate places to wee when out hacking! Have you tried the old fashioned stand up and whistle? :p

You could fake it being the end and see if he goes then get back on. ~ Quote

This is what I was going to suggest :)

I nearly did this today, I was at the yard on my own today and he felt awful, so I got off and lunged him to see if I could see the problem, he looked fine just felt awful, put him in the wash box and he did a huge wee. I like the idea of faking it being the end I will definitely try this, if not I'm going to have to stand him somewhere soft and whistle until he does his business and I can ride properly. It just seems to be happening more and more recently.

At least yours doesn't seem to associate weeing with anything. Pony I used to ride would wee as soon as he thought dinner was coming. Not helpful because he was always tied on concrete yard by that point  You could always try making the most of their apparent ability to learn to associate weeing with something and say a word or whistle everytime he does a wee, and see if you can get him to go on command before he is ridden :)

Might be worth checking out he could have a problem making him reluctant to wee. I know a gelding who had weeing issues which were treatable by the vet.

What could it be though? He doesn't actually seem to have a problem weeing, he just doesn't seem to do it at convenient times, he's definitely not shy, I felt for a while he would wee whenever I went near him, like when I went for him in the field, but the last few times I've ridden he has done a huge wee after I get off. Very frustrating although I guess not really his fault, will definitely try faking the end of the ride though

Our 11.2 welshie is always weeing when being ridden! At Equifest this year, every time we went into the ring he had to go - extremely embarrassing and unprofessional of him!

My cob hates to having a wee when hacking. He gets very stuffy and feels like he is short striding - almost as if he is crossing his legs! He will only go when he absolutely has to and then he's fine for the rest of the hack.

Train him to wee for a titbit. I can park mine on a grassy patch (doesn't like his legs splashed), tell him to wee and he will (if he has any) or at least try. He has now learned he can get two titbits, one for pretending to try and one for actually weeing, crafty beggar.

Some horses don,t like to pee when you,re on them. Every time he does pee, whistle while he,s doing it, then tell him he,s a good boy! Even when I,m poo picking if one of the horses has a pee while I,m passing I whistle, even the babies. Then when you,re riding and he feels like he needs a pee put him on some grass, stand up and whistle! We teach ours to pee as it helps lower the heart rate when they,re being vetted! Good luck, takes time.

Oh I'm glad it's not just me that has this problem then! He's not too bad in walk but trot was awful, like you say, really short stride just felt like I was being jiggled around!

:D If I did that my boy would stop for a pee every 5 minutes he is bad enough already as he bows/ sticks his head between his legs at every opportunity as a result of doing carrot stretches!

I always put mine in his stable when I bring him in from the field as he saves one up to do as soon as he comes in. He likes to have a poo too so I leave him 10 minutes or so before tacking up and riding. He has only peed once on a ride in the 7 years I've had him and the other day he was dribbling as I came in the yard he was so desparate to hold it in. He nearly always has a pee after riding as well.

I have the same problem but unfortunately before we figured out what was wrong we did badly in some county level classes showing!! He goes from perfectly behaved to evil!!
Last suday we did 3 classes at a show first 2 lovely and won. 3rd he was evil spooking being sticky and mardy not moving forward, after the 3rd had to put him back on the box for a huge wee then off into championship and he was perfect once again and got champ, but he will NOT wee with me on ever so have to put back on box or onto lorry which is a big pain. If anyone finds a way to make your horse wee with you on board let me know. I whistle and reward him when he wees.

Zak lives out 24/7 at the momet so he does tend to get dragged in tacked up then ridden, were moving yards soon so he'll be in at nights just hoping this will make a difference too. He's usually so lovely to ride, don't want this pee problem to ruin that, need to get myself some treats then! :)

So you have found your horse was spooky when needing a wee, Zak was a complete nightmare last Sunday on a hack, not like I had ever seen him before and when we got back he went for a HUGE wee as soon as I put him away. I knew it could make them act up but not be spooky, maybe that could explain it?

A lot of horses feel the need to pee after being ridden due to pressure over the kidneys - you can train them to pee on command (as is common at racecourses or competitions where a urine sample is required for drugs testing), and this helps for schooling, etc.
