I know this is a bit random, but I'm pretty convinced that needing to pee was what caused us to obliterate a fence in the showjumping last weekend - I wouldnt want to jump with a full bladder.
Supercob is a bit fussy about peeing out and about anyway, I was crafty at eland when I suspected he wanted to go, and I walked over an area where another horse had just weed.
At kelsall we put a load of shavings in the trailer to try and encourage him to go but he still waited til he was desperate before he went.
Apart from it being expensive in showjumping, I also worry about his comfort if hes holding himself for that long. And cross country it could be potentially dangerous if it makes him careless
Any suggestions for how I can encourage him to pee, is it worth trying to train it at home maybe?

No idea, my old show pony would never wee in company ever!

Topaz loves to wee on the box, and will wait until back on the box to do it even if I've been standing her on grass for 20+mins trying to convince her to do it there.

Skylla will wee where ever when ever... She particularly likes to do it in warm-ups generally right in the way ...

Seems like a trained pee is the way forward. I guess that's one good thing about the end of summer turnout

Our horse seems to be similar. At his first aff event with us, he was horrible and uptight in SJ warmup, and also had a couple of poles where he normally wouldn’t.
After we got back to the trailer - he peed for about 5 mins ? he has also been a bit “weird” about it at a couple of dressage things I’ve been to. Now if I think he might need to go, I walk him around whatever grass I can find until he decides to perform.
I think we will need to do pee training too!!

Would someone like to tell us how you can "pee train" please. nother one who is "shy to pee" although happy to dangle!!!

The only way I've heard about involves a lot of time, patience, and treats. Choose whether you want to use a clicker, whistle, or some other sound, then begin with teaching the horse that clicker/whatever sound you chose = a treat. After that, you "simply" have to wait for when your horse needs to pee... And then repeat until they have a lightbulb moment.

Shaking straw underneath was always considered a good way to get them to go. But i agree that a definite command, like a whistle (you or an actual whistle) might be the best.

A lady at our yard got tired of her horse peeing right in the middle of the stable while grooming, so she started ringing a little bell every time the horse peed on her own, also when ridden. After a while she started ringing the bell before taking the horse out of the stall... and wait. When it peed, she rang again, only took a couple of weeks for her to train the horse to pee!
