Horse next door keeps biting my horse!

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently moved to a new yard two months ago. My horse is stabled next to one other in a separate building to the other stable block. It’s a bit of an odd set up, the stable doors almost face each. I’ve attached a drawn floorplan (blue is the stable doors and red is the door to the outside, the wall separating them in high and they can’t see over).

Since moving in the horse next door is becoming more and more aggressive. It started as just pulling faces but has now progressed to biting my horse every time he comes in or out the stable. When I shoo the horse back from the stable door, he’s now worked out that the walk way is too narrow for me to wait by the door as my horse is passing so he waits for me to leave and then bites him as he’s passing.

My horse has a very gentle nature however has recently began to show signs of ulcers and is spooky and anxious in the stable which is unlike him. He also doesn’t want to come in or out the stable anymore.

The aggression from the other horse usually happens around feeding time. He even bit me while I was carrying a haynet through. I have told him off but the aggression is still getting worse and I can’t protect my horse walking past.

I’ve spoken to the owner and we are going to install a grating which I can close and shut when passing or feeding time, however does anyone know if this method works?

Ideally we don’t want the grating shut over the entire time as I’m sure that would stress the other horse as he wouldn’t be able to see much or put his head over the door.

If the vet finds ulcers in my horse I want to make sure he’s in a non stressful environment to give him the best chance of recovery and healing.

Any advice on stable door gratings or advice on experiences like mine would be great! Thank you.

I feel your pain, I have been in this position and I have been in the position of the other livery too. How about mounting a piece of wood between the two stables? Just need to be door height or upwards doesnt need to be huge, just needs to be enough to stop contact. Granted mine were next to each other at the time but this would probably work the same way, you can see the wood here attached to the stableIMG_4958.jpeg
